Why abortion? I know that most of you know that that all we talk about is abortion. I just want to know why this shows up so much. Can we not pick a new topic (other than the stimulus plan)?

It's seasonal. Abortion comes up afresh as spring approaches, just like snowdrops.
Other topics also come in seasonal cycles. Summer, for example, is teen-racist season. Keep your eye out for them. ;)
At least, this is my theory.

Abortion gets so much forum time because it is quite possibly the definitive issue of an age.
No other single issue has the potential to do as much damage to the rights of so many people, in such short order.

Religon?
Politics?
it cycles through. eventually it will move on to homosexual rights, then religion, then politics then back to Abortion.

Religion and politics are not 'single issues'. Homosexual rights affects a smaller proportion of the population.

It's a powerfully polarizing debate with little in the way of middle ground. People are highly invested in their side, whichever it is, and feel very strongly about it. There are few people who don't have a closely-held opinion on the subject. So, people argue about it a lot.
You know what kind of threads we have entirely too many of on this forum? Happy go lucky kumbaya bullshit threads about how we should all get along and stop debating abortion/Israel/Iraq/PETA/etc. This is a debate forum. What would be the point if we limited ourselves to topics that we all agreed on?

I disagree. With all the debate threads, we need the "why can't everyone get along" threads and the fun or humorous threads to balance things out. If you'd like, we can argue about this for the next five hundred posts.

Those are single issues. just not a simple one [in relation to abortion/equal rights/etc].

probably because abortion is a hot topic and because people have strong veiws on it, it would be the same if someone made a thread on euthinasia or the death penalty, the stronger peoples views are, the more debate it sparks

Gladly.
The "why can't everyone get along" threads are meaningless spam because people don't come to this forum to get along with everyone. It's a debate forum. It's purpose and intent is in no way obscured. People come here to debate with other people, not to post their thoughts and get seven hundred "I agree" responses. I'm sure there are forums out there where everyone just pats each other on the back about how right they all are about everything, but this isn't, wasn't, won't be, hasn't tried to be, doesn't want to be, nor shouldn't be one of those places.

Abortion is a divisive subject, therefore it will generate arguments, it's as simple as that. NSG has a diverse group of people from many different walks of life and from many nations, therefore the likelihood of gathering a population that is going to argue about a divisive subject is very high. That and people like to argue.

It's seasonal. Abortion comes up afresh as spring approaches, just like snowdrops.
"In the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of embryos"? Tennyson had it wrong all this time.
Backing up your seasonal theory, the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision is January 22, and of course spring in any election year is primary-debate season, where Republicans fall all over themselves trying to be the most anti-abortion and Democrats compete to see who can ignore the issue for the longest time. So abortion's going to be in the news, at least in the US. I have no idea what the excuse is in other countries.

This is NSG; often it starts with a ridiculously extreme statement like "Anyone who tries to get an abortion should get thrown in jail, even if it wa caused by rape!" or "All priests must endorse abortion or be jailed for being unamerican!". Frankly, I think most of the extreme statements are made by the conservatives, but keep in mind that as a liberal I'm naturally biased...

and yet that's exactly what happens most of the time. only a few people in any given thread ever really disagree, and those are the ones who generate most of the debate. most of the rest are just people saying "yeah, I agree with you" or, if it's a thread discussing a news article, repeating whatever Poster #2 said in a different form.

Because here in the United States anti-choice movements continue to try to deprive women of fundamental rights.
Because all over the world women are being oppressed and dying from unsafe abortions.
It's a legitimate and pressing issue. Once the rights of women are recognized universally without constant attack, the issue can be silenced.

That was hilarious... I happen to agree... So I will post my two cents here as well.
Abortion is a hot topic, just like the other topics ALWAYS discussed by others in the same social group (And yes... I'm rounding everyone who posts on this site into a single group). We always debate items found in topics like religion, politics, human rights and a godly amount of others.
I saw that someone mentioned we debate these issues because we simply feel stong about them and that there isnt any middle-ground... And I agree, but I think its primarily of a different reason. We debate it because we feel like its the only way we can force change into a world where we have little say. For instance... If you have the right to vote, or you are a holder of some low level political position, Your time wouldnt be spent in debating topics trying to change minds. Your time would be spend trying to get things done, not trying to recruit followers.
We all simply debate because we can't do anything else. Not saying I'm against debating in forums... Since... sure.. its fun and intrigueing
