There's something growing in my house!

My wife and I are known for many things:

Great parties, bizarre sex rituals, the best tacos in town, a short lived mud catapult(They made me dismantle it. :( ).

One thing we aren't know for are our green thumbs. My wife can barely keep a couple african violets going and me? Hehehe. No, plants weren't my thing. That's why I'm really unusually proud of my Aerogarden herbs:

I have fake plants in my house, does that count?

Amelia (my cat) used to get into the plants when she was a kitten, but not since one actually tipped over and poured dirt on her. hehe

weird.

Well, I shrank them some already, but I posted them that way because they aren't exactly small. But here we go:

Evil has been eyeing mine. My wife suggested we get a pot of catnip and set it next to the Aerogarden to catch the excess light.

I have grown pretty much everything that will grow in my area. That means basically every kind of crop, from quick radishes to six-month artichokes. I don't go nuts monitoring pH levels or spraying for pests, but I do have a double anti-intrusion barrier: chickenwire on the perimeter, with an iron mesh "deadline" on the interior. And just like in the movies, anything crossing the deadline is liable to get shot. It makes gardening more exciting. :p

I had great luck with corn. We planted it in two beds in our backyard. We all realized the extent of our love for corn that year, and it was not as great as we'd thought.

My dad likes to plant things, and then make us weed the garden. . . <_<

Well, he did when I was younger. Sort of too old to be bullied about now. But when I'm a real grownup with a home and stuff I want to grow fresh herbs.

You should grow cilantro. Also, mint. Fresh cilantro takes good tacos to the next level, imo.

What the hell do you do with mint? I planted some last year on a lark, and it grew in massive bushes. I had basically no use for it. I agree completely about the cilantro, though.

Yeah, that's the problem with it, it's a bit of a weed.

But, you muddle them for mojitos! Also, mixed with lemon and lime juice and a few other herbs it can make a delicious salad dressing or marinade for chicken.

Also, I like to just crush mint between my hands, and then smell minty fresh all day. Natural perfumes (like crushed herbs, or lemon or orange rind, or a dab of vanilla) make me really happy and feel very pretty. And, if you go out on a date, and have your neck kissed, you don't have the alcohol-perfume flavor that is distinctly unyummy.

OMG I'm so excited you said that! Because I KNOW something about this!
Or, more accurately, I know that wiki knows something about this!

Some people perceive an unpleasant "soapy" taste or a rank smell and avoid eating the leaves. Popular belief that this is genetically determined may arise from the known genetic variation in taste perception of the synthetic chemical phenylthiocarbamide; however, no specific link has yet been established between cilantro and a bitter taste perception gene.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriander (which cites: Wooding S (2006). "Phenylthiocarbamide: A 75-Year Adventure in Genetics and Natural Selection". Genetics 172 (4): 2015–2023. )

So it tastes like dishwater to you but not to me!

Man, its so exciting when I get to pretend to be all smart and stuffs.

People who can't cook sometimes use it as a crutch, it's true. But judicious use of cilantro can be just the thing for certain meats.

The same could be said of the electric oven.

Or woodworking with power tools. Or sex toys in the bedroom.

The tools may make the process easier, but there's still a big difference between the process of cooking and heating a tv dinner. There's likewise a big difference between growing fresh herbs in a kitchen appliance and buying a vial of dried leaf dust at the supermarket. *nod*

Cool little plants. I'd plant a garden, but I don't have the land for it (I live in an apartment, and the property manager wouldn't appreciate me ripping up the ground next to my apartment building, so I can plant vegetables). I have heard of container gardening, which I might try (I've got 2 brand new 5 gallon buckets that I could use), but I'd need some sort of grow light, as I doubt enough natural light comes through my windows (they're double paned, and there's a lot of trees in the yard).

You should really begin considering transplanting that basil into some earth.
Oh, and beware: if it begins to blossom, cut the blossoms away; they destroy the flavour of the leaves.

Btw, it's fairly easy to grow garlic, too. Go pesto!

That one chive looks pretty impressive. ;)

I wouldn't say I've got a green thumb, but I do have a herb garden at the back of the house, and a couple more herbs growing on the window sill. They are the more dainty ones, and the problem with putting them out is not so much the temperatures, but insects.
The little garden I have is next to a big wall, and there's something living in the cracks that ate the last two basil plants I put out there within 2 days. It also ate the lettuce, and the peas.
But it shuns the stronger herbs (thyme, rosemary, parsley...) as well as the onions and the brokkoli. So I've got those still growing. :)

I have some windowbox herbs that I plan to expand upon in the spring. I'm thinking about tomatoes and snow peas on my balcony this year, too.

My greatest herb discovery so far has been Vietnamese coriander. It's great on eggs and is basically indestructible as a plant.

I know! In addition to what Dubsy posted above I've also read theories that it's because of an enzyme some people have (or lack?) in their saliva that makes certain plants taste soapy.

It's not just cilantro, either, for me. Ginger tastes like dish washing liquid to me and the worst offender is lemon grass which tastes exactly the way toilet bowl freshener smells.

I can tolerate them in very, very small amounts (maybe not the lemon grass) but when they get too strong it literally makes me nauseous. It really is like eating soap and who wants that?

It sucks because I have a really hard time finding something to eat in Asian restaurants and everybody thinks I'm just a picky & unadventurous eater. Hrmph.

At the moment all I have are two cacti and a rock plant. I've had several cacti and they've all done ok, as they're pretty simple to look after. I had a salvia divinorum plant for quite a while until some aggressive clipping seemed to break it.

In the garden, I've grown various things, mostly vegetables. I have pictures but not with a digital camera so I can't link; I'd like to, though, as my immensely large cabbages won a prize (for their immense largeness). I've also grown carrots, rhubarbs, onions, and tomatoes, but the tomatoes didn't do too well. I don't spend a lot of time in the garden, but I'm pretty lucky to have one as I just rent the room and the landlord lets me keep a patch to myself, so once the soil begins breaking up a bit I will start planting some more things. This year, I'm thinking of trying some tubers.

I had a bonsai tree when I was younger.
It did not make it.
In fact, I have even managed to kill a cactus.

Though my latest plant, an aloe vera one, seems to thrive whatever I do.
(not that I intentionally try to off it.)
That plant survived constant dark and water every other week for a period of 6 months.
I now have it facing the rising sun on a windowsill and give it water every third day or some such.
It went from white/light green and thin to moderate and a darker shade of green.
I might even have to re-plant it soon, or even divide into several plants.

Have you ever tried one of those plastic film window insulation kits? I've had the wrong kind of window to get them to stick until we moved but other people swear by them. Insta-greenhouse.

Obviously I'm assuming you have an inside sill you can move the plants to in the winter. Leaving the plants outside and insulating the window won't help. :p

Also: My Italian parsley finally sprouted. Still no sign from my Cilantro. I am beginning to suspect why they removed it from most of their herb kits.
