Do you have an "online persona"?

Getbrett

If so, does your persona reflect reality? Without the subtlety of face to face conversation, do you feel that your online persona is divorced from your real life one?

I ask this because I know a few of you consider me a troll, or at least a cock. I think I have a brash, uncompromising and often cold online persona, but I don't know if it realistically reflects my true self. I'm curious if anyone else feels the same.

I certainly have fewer inhibitions online. This seems to translate into being a cock, at least judging by some opinions. Does this mean that when distilled, fundamentally I am a cock?

I'm not convinced.

I don't think I'm a cocky drunk. I like to make people laugh.

I think its cause I balance that by being a genuinly nice, caring, guy at heart. And Im hilarious.

The only difference is I actually get along a lot better with my ideological opposites in person. One of my best friends is actually a Christian libertarian. :p So are a lot of my buddies I drink and hit the bars with.

Oh, theyre still relentlessly mocked. We just have a lot more that binds us then politics, so its known to be purely in good fun.

I think its why the right wingers I get along with the best here are people like TBC, Neo Bret, and TAI. We've had discussions on things outside of politics and found a lot of common ground, so to me their not just a faceless ideology on the internet for me to ruthlessly attack.

I talk more online than IRL (because I don't like the sound of my own voice), and can put together words somewhat more coherently when I'm writing them down (because my brain is like that). I also used to be a lot sillier and less inhibited online than IRL, but that's changed, it's about balanced by now, so I'm just as emotionally repressed here as I appear to normal people.

So, only slightly I guess.

I don't care all that much if someone who's consistently a mean, callous asshole on an online forum has a number of "redeeming qualities" in real life - if they have it in them to be a mean, callous asshole to people online I'm not going to think better of them just because they're not a mean, callous asshole to people offline.

Holy %#&*!

I am from a wealthy, mostly white, Christian upper middle class county. I grew up 3 minutes from a town that spends more capita per GDP on churches then any other place in the country. Guess the political stance of 90% of the people I used to encounter on a day to day basis? :D

These are the guys I went to school with. Like I said, there is a lot more to our relationship then politics. In fact, even with new friends I make, politics is usually not an issue discussed right away :p. All though I must say Ive made a lot more left wing friends since I came to university.

Its like Neo Bret and I. We have warhammer and Star Trek to talk about. So even if his politics are wrong (:p) we have common ground. So hes not a faceless ideology to me. Same with me and TBC with history or TAI with traveling.

Very much so, I think "Rotovia" is very much an extreme of myself, more Catholic, more Atheist, more secularist, more liberal, more blunt, more confusing.

I also participate in a number of government and parliamentary simulations and my characters tend towards the classical liberal/libertarian side, and that has translated into a gradual shifting of my own views.

Yes, this is what I'd say happens to me when I come to NSG. I take my innate personality, and then extend it to the maximum level allowed under NSG rules. There's a certain amount of irony inherent in everything I post.

If so, does your persona reflect reality? Without the subtlety of face to face conversation, do you feel that your online persona is divorced from your real life one?

I speak like a nobleman in the Middle-Ages when I'm online. I CALL MY ATTACKS, and I came up with several ways to deliver them, from haikus to prose, going through some Shakespeare in the process. I sometimes act like I'm a wizard or like I'm on a stage, and I use Bleach-Kido-recitation-esque preparations for my arguing moves while I'm at it.

So, yeah, I'd say my online persona is divorced from my real life one, because otherwise I'd be VERY insane. :p

I know. And it was disgustingly self-reinforcing. Spammers leave, NSG loses appreciation of spam, more spammers leave, NSG loses a large portion of it's sense of humor. Until it gets so bad that we realize without us NSG will consume itself in srs bizniz, and try to break the general population in again.
Oh, the innuendo... lol

Me, Grav, Iffy, TBD, sounds like an "spamfest" for the ages. I call Cowgirl! You and Lady Friend could (ahem) come (ahem) too.

I thought TBD's nation died months ago?

Interesting topic. I know that I read somewhere that cyber bullying is on the rise due to the anonymity that the Internet allows. Granted, I'm sure none of us are cyber bullies, but it's a wonder if there's a correlation between an 'offline persona' and an 'online persona'.
I'm a bit more confident online than I am offline. I suffered some soft tissue damage while I was in the Army and I'm very sensitive to it. If there's a chance we have to run or do anything where its apparent I'm not as fit as I look, I avoid it unless its my closest friends who know my circumstances. I'm aware that's slightly crazy but I do get a lot of bowling in :P

I'm sure none of us are cyber bullies,

Actually, Id wager that the people who are susceptible to Cyber Bullying would call a great deal many posters that we dismiss off hand as "Trolls" and "Flaimbaters" as Cyber Bullies...

I think it has more to do with the fact that Nationstates generally caters to an older skewed Audience and so has a slightly higher tolerance level than the average, MySpace user, for example, lol...

Everyone has one to some extent-just like everyone has a "Letter writing Persona" and an "Essay for the Prof Persona", a "Telephone Voice" and a "Talking to the HR manager because I want the job Voice".

People ARE different depending on where they are and who they're talking to, how they're talking, etc. etc.

That management prick at work is sometimes actually a decent guy off-the-clock, for instance.

I can't call you lot a bunch of cunts so yeah I guess

I'm that guy you know that happens to have all the offensive jokes and no fear of saying them in public however if I do it here the mods will club me to death for instance:

a woman takes [a certain member of the coloured race which may or may not descend from Africa] back to her flat after a night out.

she asks him to show her if its true what they say about [minority race]...

so he stabs her and runs off with her purse!

I know that I read somewhere that cyber bullying is on the rise due to the anonymity that the Internet allows.

*stuffs you in the garbage can*

also thats usually done by 13 year old girls over facebook so the anonymity is kinda disputed

You have time to write out your posts and review them before sending them out to the world for perusal. Thus, you can add long or esoteric words like "perusal" that you would not have remembered to use in real life if you were simply speaking it.

If so, does your persona reflect reality? Without the subtlety of face to face conversation, do you feel that your online persona is divorced from your real life one?

The Internet is a very very large village. Anything you do or say could become common knowledge. (eg a prospective employer might consider the content of your Facebook and gain information you would never volunteer in an interview.)

It's also a very very large city. You could get away with being an asshole for a long long time, and still be treated as a stranger not an enemy. (eg, getting the satisfaction of successfully trolling forum after forum, or get rich from phishing scams.)

If you want the trust and familiarity of a village, you can have them. If you want the opportunities of a city, you can have them. But you ought to have a clear idea of which model your "persona" is living in, lest your trust be exploited or your expectations dashed.

I'm a "village" persona, myself. I don't make it easy for internet strangers to find my real name or street address, but I don't say anything I really don't want my RL neighbours knowing. And I use the Internet because it is cosy and convenient, not because I expect to get rich in the big city.
Saint Clair Island
17-02-2009, 01:56
I prefer to think of the Internet not as a village, nor as a city, nor as a series of tubes; but as a sort of spiderweb, with unbreakable filaments linking points which are individual servers. It forms a sort of web of servers, spanning the earth; you could call it a "world wide web". And I don't know about you, but the world is pretty wide, and webs are things that you can get caught in by a predator, such as a spider. Now, if you're -- to follow the analogy -- an insect trapped in a web, do you really want to release your personal information to the spider before it rolls you up in the threads and devours you? Which it was going to do anyway, but if it does it now, it'll do it knowing that you really like avocados. And dying with that kind of memory would just be embarrassing. Well, not really, because insects don't feel embarrassment, but it would be pretty embarrassing for me, who's a human, not an insect, and thus not caught in the metaphorical world wide web, which the cosmic spider only designed to.....

I'll come in again.

I love it.

In the face of movies and TV, cable, soundbites for the evening news ... people have rediscovered for themselves the advantages of writing.

the equation is "normal person + anonymity + audience = total fuckwad" IIRC

It's a fair approximation, from an age when internet users were predominantly nerds, predominantly male, and elitist about "I did it first."

We still joke about it ("you are posting to an internet forum therefore you have no social skills QED") and it might still have some truth statistically.

But the Internet represents the interests (and to a lesser extent, the speech) of prosperous westerners far more accurately now. It's the intellectual suburbia of our age, and it can only become more and more representative of RL social interaction as net-enabled devices become cheaper, net access becomes cheaper, and more and more people who would otherwise be quite satisfied with their TV news and their greeting cards are exposed to the medium ... forced to use the medium in fact, to do their banking or their shopping or their work.

(Wow, that was a long sentence. Drinking before noon, bad Bunny!)

I think I'm trying to say: the more accurately a forum approximates a RL meeting-place, the more a fuckwad is just a fuckwad. And who wants to be that?

I like discussing all kinds of topics online, on all sorts of forums. I probably have tens of thousands of posts if I added them all up. In "real-life" I haven't had a simple non-work-related conversation with anyone in at least ten years. I'm not a different person online, really. It's just that whatever trace of a personality I do have is magnified many times over online - the defects, the good bits, etc., probably come across in an exaggerated way that is most unlike the "real" me. That makes it pretty important to stay anonymous, for me.
