Pocket Knives and Sharp Implements

I'm not sure if this is a cultural phenomenon all across the US but where I live, it is a very common practice for men to carry pocket knives with them virtually everywhere. They are useful tools able to be used to do things from the obvious, like cutting something you when you didn't expect too, opening bottles, even a makeshift screwdriver. I carry a small ~2 inch knife from frost cutlery known as a little gater, I favor it for its sharp cutting edge and blunted point and its very easy to open and close. It fits easily in any pocket (sometimes Swiss army knives are bulky) so I have no problems carrying it around; its not a weapon just simply another one of the many odds and ends I keep in my pocket for when its needed.

Anyone else here carry a pocket knife or similar tool around with them? How often does it come in handy? If you care, what kind?

I've carried a Victorinox Tinker Swiss Army Knife since I was ten. *nod*

Well, not non-stop. I spend a lot of time naked and keeping it on my person during those times has proven problematic.

No because as soon as I went outside the front door I'd turn into an evil petty thug and get blammed with a compulsory jail sentance for carrying it without a specific reason. If I got caught anyway...

Stupid paranoid Labour Government...

Also I don't have one.

I had a very nice Swiss Army knife, but I gave it to a friend in Cuba before i returned home. He was a fisherman and really had more use for it that I do. Maybe I'll get another one if I ever start getting out int he wilderness again.

I usually carry a cheap ripoff swiss army knife not that I ever really get a chance to use it

protip: buy knives from fishing stores they are always cheaper and you can pick up ones with a lock on the knife (Mr Brown presumably likes me chopping my fingers off)

I tend to not carry sharp objects with me. For me keys work just as well for most common needs that I would use a knife for. I think the stupid monkey within me is fine improvising tools without the need to carry a designated one around.

New York has similar laws, I believe. Something weird about a very loose interpretation of "gravity knives," although non-locking blades (swiss army knives, etc) are allowed.

Leatherman PSTII, a Remington-marked folder that came with some .22 ammo, and a promotional knife from my favorite sporting goods store. One is usually in my coat, one in my light jacket, and one in my jeans pocket. A decent knife is always useful.

*edit* The leatherman is what I usually use the most - pliers, several screwdrivers, and the blade all get a workout. I'm impressed with the quality, too. The blade has needed almost no sharpening since I got it 5 or 6 years ago.

I carry a knife a bit like a Swiss Army knife. Use it quite a lot, mainly the blade for opening boxes and packaging. The scissors and the bottle opener also come in handy. Though despite Labour's crack down on knives, I could probably carry a fairbairn-sykes pattern knife at my age, and get away with it.

I carry a Leatherman Wave along with two flashlights, one head band one and one minimag (actually, I lost the latter a while ago and haven't replaced it), work gloves, a 10' tape measure, a small notebook, a voltage detector, a couple of pens, scissors, some other random bits. I really only carry all this for work, the only reason I'd be carrying this stuff 'normally' is so I don't lose it.

The Leatherman gets the most use, though I hardly ever use the knife part.

no one wanted sand/dirt getting in from outside in their relatively clean house, people mostly wore sandals, so their feet got dirty. at least that's how it was explained to me.

My pants are too tight to wear anything substantial in the pockets. Don't remind me of that one day I carried a hair rubber band for a potential pony tail in my pocket and wondered about the weird looks I got every now and again until a friend came out and told me it wasn't a good idea to carry a condom directly againt my body (heat).. the print the rubber ring made must've resembled it.

.. though I am one to carry loads of useful utensils in my bag. As a clean-freak, I carry wet towels and disinfectant for both skin and surfaces; I've always got mints on me and lotion/lip-balm; I'm not one to leave the house without paper and pens, and I usually have something small to entertain me, too - I'm a big fan of little toys.

It depends what I'm doing, if I'm kayaking I carry a 5 inch lock-knife with a rope cutter on the back, if I'm doing general outdoorsy stuff (camping, climbing, mountaineering, etc.) I have a lovely stainless steel Victorinox with few but useful tools.

In day-to-day life I find that I don't need to carry anything although the Leatherman I have in the house frequently comes in useful.

Here it's generally more of a nerd habit. I (nerd), my fiancee (nerd) and many friends (nerds) of mine usually carry a Swiss knife, either in the pocket or in the backpack etc.

It isn't considered a weapon (it would be quite difficult to use it as weapon), so it's perfectly legal to carry one. You just can't carry it on a plane.

...never mind that you can do someone quite a lot of damage with, oh, a pen, a compass, and any number of other tools we let kids use....

Not to mention I've seen some chicks do some serious damage with nothing but their fingernails as well.

I have a multitool I keep in my dorm room for various tool tasks. It has a knife on it, but I've only ever used it to open the cable jack in my wall so I could fiddle with it.

I have carried a knife since I was a kid. Usually just a nice Buck knife with a blade lock.

I've recently taken to carrying a black Boker Subcom, with a plain edge. It's great for opening boxes, or any other light cutting needs, and it's pretty small so it's easy to carry (just over 2 ounces, and less than 3" when closed, IIRC).

http://www.legislature.idaho.gov/idstat/IC/ArtISect11.htm Open carry of any weapon is essentially unrestricted in my state. Move here and you can go wherever you please with a claymore strapped to your back.
