you know... this might make an interesting thread. 'what makes a person a hero."

From a comment in another thread

so in your opinions what makes one a hero/heroine?
Funny clothes?
Dieing to save others?
Getting Injured to save others?
Helping Others in general?
Serving in the military/police/fire fighting/dangerous line of work?
Making a positive impact on someone's life?
Two slices of bread, some tomato and a meat?
etc
Also out of the stories given over the past month(kid getting killed to save his sister, landing a plane in the Huston, etc) Which people/person do you feel earned the title hero and which didn't?

I have to say a (super)hero/heroine is one that wears funny clothes and has an archvillian.
While a regular hero/heroine is someone that helps others with no immediate/any benefits to themselves.
(poll added, can chose more than one)

I feel such a deep sense of deja vu about reading this thread. Yesterday I was talking to someone very important to me and this person spoke about things that to me, feel like the way a hero is.

Whoever gets top billing in the opening credits.

Well, most of the time. Sometimes it's just the most famous actor in the production. Usually they amount to the same thing though.

An important part of any definition of "hero" is people acting/being willing to act in a manner that is highly dangerous/dificulty/against your self-interest for the good of others.

Doing what is right when it would have been easier to do wrong.

(Right and wrong here are subjective values and pertain to those that judge the individual concerned to be a hero)

Its difficult to describe what makes a hero.

I don't think there can be such a thing.

"Hero" to me implies, alongside astounding bravery, very high moral principles and always sticking to these. I'm inclined to believe all that is impossible from a real person.

For me, there are many courageous people, but no heroes except in comic books.

But How are you going to destroy the Countless other portrayers of him?

Plus their many other characters, remember, Mark Hamill has the Force, lol...

A boy doesn't have to go to war to be a hero; he can say he doesn't like pie when he sees there isn't enough to go around.

You get a fighter enough experience to level it up and don't choose to level it to a captain.

From a comment in another thread

so in your opinions what makes one a hero?
The ability to feel and want to give.
Funny clothes?
Nah.
Dieing to save others?
Not necessarily.
Getting Injured to save others?
Not necessarily.
Helping Others in general?
It certainly entails that.
Serving in the military/police/fire fighting/dangerous line of work?
These men you speak of are all, in a certain way, heroes in their own right. Police officers and firefighters especially. But anyone, with the belief and the desire, can be a hero.
Making a positive impact on someone's life?
That, yes. But some heroes can leave an odd taste in one's mouth.
Two slices of bread, some tomato and a meat?
etc
The ability to make people, regardless of wether is through fear or adoration, feel respect for them, feel empathy for them, is what makes a hero. To me, that is.

My answers are, of course, the bolded ones.

Also out of the stories given over the past month(kid getting killed to save his sister, landing a plane in the Huston, etc) Which people/person do you feel earned the title hero and which didn't?

Someone I've become very close to in the past few weeks has earned, in my eyes, the status of hero. Not because he has done anything heroic, but because he thinks on a grand scale and wishes to die, to pass, in a blaze of glory. He wants to, at least, be known for doing what he wants to. That, too, is heroic. For that, and for many other things, I respect him.

According to Wikipedia a hero is "a popular Italian American sandwich that consists of an oblong roll, often of Italian or French bread, split lengthwise either into two pieces or opened in a "V" on one side, and filled with various meats, cheeses, vegetables, spices, and sauces."

I recommend the meatball hero myself. With Provolone.

Hmmm... *Skips through Posts*

Other: (Role Model-ish) One who does his best to stick to his Morals. Good or Bad. Does amazing things (Good or Bad).

Hitler could be considered a hero to few. He did amazing things. His rise to power was pretty damn epic. I'd consider that of him my hero.

Winston Churchill did more "GOOD" things, hero aswell.

If I'd known it was that easy, I'd have done it years ago.
I don't suppose that "hero" is a paid position? No? I didn't think so.

What grim social commentary I am a catalyst to. So depressing.

My definition of a hero is someone who takes great personal risks to help others.

The kid who died to stop his sister from getting raped is a hero of the highest order. The guy who landed the plane in the Hudson isn't a hero, as he took no unusual risks (though he should be commended for being a damn good pilot). Willing soldiers, honest cops, and firefighters are by definition heroes.
