Your lips say no no, but your eyes say yes yes!

Now that I have tricked most of y'all into reading this thread by promising something along the line of discussing the merit of rape (sorry we won't be discussing the merit of rape, although I do believe Pepe Lew Pew is a rapist at most, and a molester at least), I do want to pose this question though. Are our eyes windows into our soul? Can our eyes betray our true desires, what we really want? If you take a person who is "hard to read" and who hides his emotions, but study his eyes, will you be able to read him, and to see his emotions? Just how much can you tell about the person by looking into their eyes?

Actually I thought it would be about lying. There are people on this /b/oard who like to discuss the role of surprise in sexual relations and there are those who don't.

No, they just seem to be. What actually betrays the emotions is the rest of the face, including, though, muscles around the eyes.

/b/oard?! This is not that /b/oard, so don't label it as such.

The eyes are just some gooey, quite inflexible balls, with a fairly sophisticated focusing device at the front and an equally sophisticated perception system at the back. They do convey some information about someones physical health, but that's about it.
The rest of the emotional expression is, as said earlier, done via the facial muscles.
And, to answer the question with the shattered remains of a quote: some people are able to read most people's emotions most of the time, most people are able to read some people's emotions some of the time, but nobody is able to read everybody's emotions all of the time.

Well I'll drop in and say I think that eyes are the windows to the soul. I can offer no scientific explanation for it - it's just that way.

Can our eyes betray our true desires, what we really want?

Facial expression and body language perhaps, of which eyebrow movement, how wide the eyes are opened etc would be a part, but the eyes themselves on their own, no.

If you take a person who is "hard to read" and who hides his emotions, but study his eyes, will you be able to read him, and to see his emotions?

On the eyes alone, probably not.

Just how much can you tell about the person by looking into their eyes?

Me personally? From doing that, well... the amount of information I can deduce from looking in someone's eyes is somewhere in the region of "absolutely fuck all":p

I agree with you on Pepe le Pew, "no" never means "no" to him. On the subject of the eyes, it's not so clear cut. On certain things I'm capable of looking into someones eyes & lying, on other things not. I think it's actually a person's overall body language that gives them away, not specifically the eyes.

I can usually get a fair idea of eye colour. Beyond that not much.

I can tell by the eyes if someone is sleeping or not.

Well pupil dilation can indicate either attention or arousal and eye-blink rate can indicate cognitive activity. Eye tracking studies are routinely used in psychology to measure focus. Aside from that there is also the fact that people find it harder to look someone directly in the eyes and tell a bold faced lie.

My intuition is that this old wives tale is at least partly true...

There are lots of possible scientific explanations for it but I'm not well versed in the topic enough to explain...

I'm pretty good at telling someone's mood from their eyes.

If someone looks upward and to the right while talking to a police officer, this is grounds for arrest and imprisonment, also multiple slow motion flashbacks. Or maybe it was to the left?
I forget, but the point is that CSI is a great perpetrator of misinformation.

You can tell what colour their eyes are, and some other information about the general state of their health. Otherwise not much.

Some people are allegedly telepathic and can tell your emotions from looking in your eyes. (That's why I try to avoid eye contact. I also heard that tinfoil hats can prevent the government's subliminal messages from getting into your brain.)

I can read everything about a mood with someone's eyes.

My own eyes change color with my mood and I know that sounds weird.
There is a color code system and I tell people how to read me.

Usually the muscles around the eyes give a lot of information, but also eyebrows, dilation, direction when thinking or answering, discoloration, focus, glossiness, and a myriad of other things are a dead give away to other information.

The only other way to read someone is by feeling them, and I don't mean by touch.
A good area for people to focus on are the eyes...
At least that's easiest for me.

That's why I always wear sunglasses. This way the only thing that people can tell from looking at my face is that I'm the sort of douchebag who wears sunglasses indoors and keeps bumping into the furniture.

Eyes can tell you some things - if the the individual is into you, for example, the pupil will expand. There a couple of other medical things, but that's about it as far as I know. The rest is, as has been previously mentioned, minute changes in the facial expression.

I always disliked Pepe LePew.

Eyes can say a lot, but I guess it would really depend on the person. There are eyes that say nothing at all.

Depends how. Fry them in oil over very high heat, and they maintain their internal consistency but gain a delightfully crispy outer cover.

I also have several anecdotes that go along with it.
I think ... different people have different "abilities" with this ... and many, many people already don't know the difference between subtle facial clues / subconscious interpretation and what "the eyes" have to say.
