Collision in Space. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29179826/)

hmm... Debris in space?

Sounds like a need for the United Galaxies Sanitation Patrol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quark_(TV_series)).

hmm... with space tourism launching in Hawaii (http://www.khon2.com/news/local/39529517.html) in the near future... perhaps a new career of space sanitation employee may not be too far fetched...

Russian Mission Control chief Vladimir Solovyov said Tuesday's smashup of a derelict Russian military satellite and a working U.S. Iridium commercial satellite occurred in the busiest part of near-Earth space — some 500 miles (800 kilometers) above Earth.
Anyone else think that the "derelict" Russian satellite wasn't so derelict after all?

Ready the nukes, we're going to war!

Wonder how much of the debris is magnetic. There's no way to effectively clean up such a pile of trash.

All you need is a huge magnet strapped to a spaceship. Although you won't know what speed they will come at you, but you'll still collect them!

It'd be much more fun just to blow the debris into little pieces. And then blow the little pieces into smaller pieces. And then again. And again. Again.

Most of a satellite wouldn't be magnetic though, mostly made of light weight materials, titanium, aluminium, copper wiring, silicone.

I was thinking more like blocks of Ballistic Gel or other such compound. something that can catch and slow down moving debris.

A geosynchronous satellite is moving at about 3.07 km/sec.

The 0.22 rimfire cartridge, which has a very small powder charge, sends its bullets on their way at between 370 m/s and 460 m/s.

Maybe someone should put this into the stimulus package - we're gunna need a lot of ballistic gel.

you realize that the speed is measured by assuming the recording object is stationary. zero velocity. but a balistic gel-like contraption would also be moving so the speed would only be the difference. bewteen the two objects individual speed.

I realize enough to know that if you want to be pedantic its disingenuous to talk about speed as if it has direction - that's velocity.

so you would now shift your argument it to a mistaken use of the word Speed instead of the point of the post.

err... no. The ballistic gel idea isn't Technical. it's a simple bare-bone idea. you brought up speed and velocity as a counterpoint. so you decided to get technical first. Nyah! :p

No no no, you were all stationary objects and speed differences and whatnot. I couldn't really respond to the content of your post because I didn't get it, so I decided to attack you in another way!

Oh shit, that came out wrong...

I was hoping this thread would produce some Psudo science ideas... also a commontary about Hawaii's future in space tourism... I like fried Red herring... so... :D

EDIT: btw... any ideas for a space cleanup VC?

Pigs will eat just about anything.

Put some Pigs in Space (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFvZtROeJrE&feature=PlayList&p=9D21F24E749615C2&playnext=1&index=49), and they'll take care of the problem.

the Hoover strong in this one

"when that jar of peanut butter
goes crashing to the floor
and mushed into the carpet
by the brat who lived next door
don't reach for the broom or dustpan
don't get the electric mop.
for grimy, greasy, dirty jobs
Hoover really sucks!"

I wonder why that jingle never caught on...

I was just waiting to see how many billions are lost in $ for communication satellite damages further incurred from debris. I thought i'd read something about the nature of the orbit though that kinda put the kibosh on that. I guess we'll see.
It'd be kinda interesting to see a great domino effect. Even better that there's some probability to that.

I say... give it time. after all, you now got debris moving in odd angles and such...

hmm... this sounds like something that happened on Dilbert (T.V. Series)...
