So I've recently been accepted to grad school at UT Austin. I've heard that the city has democratic leanings and beyond that I don't know much more. I know the school is supposed to be good for civil engineering (ranked 4th in the nation), but I don't know much about the school outside of the civil department. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone knows much about the city or school of Austin, if anyone has visited or lived there, I'd love to hear your impression.

I will be visiting for a few days in march, but any insight will be helpful, anything ranging from weather to culture and architecture, anything will help. Thanks.

6th Street. Perfect party place. Hit Antones for some blues. And hit the non-SXSW venues for some great cheap music during the festival. Hit Barton Springs, though only if you have a bit of cold tolerance. Lots of cool shops on the Drag. (Guadalupe) And Austin is billed as live music capital of the world. Plenty of entertainment- it's a party town.

Austin is a pretty cool place. It is a very democratic city, and we have tons of local bands and a rather green city. The only bad parts are that it's kind of expensive to live here, there's alot of pollen in the air, and the weather is pretty crazy. around winter time it can be 90 something degrees one day the 30 something degrees the next.

I hear that their transportation department is one of the best in the business. IIRC, calculated the average deceleration rate for all vehicles for use in sight distance calculations, among other things.

I hear they are planning a riverwalk like San Antonio. That would be very cool.

you chose your grad school by politics? :p

also there are signs that I may be in Texas during August and I think that is good reason enough

heh, no, I was just curious as to the culture of the area, and someone had mentioned it, so I figured I'd share my gossip. On a side note, what would bring you to Texas?

Transport isn't really my deal, but interesting.

well I'm from buffalo, it can be 60 one day and in the ones the next. Not sure how I'll handle the weather, but as long as I have some AC during the 80+ days I'll be ok. Also, a limited amount of research indicates Austin would be slightly cheaper than living here for me.

well once they cross the Austin wall back into Texas proper mandatory daily church is again required. Its a policy of containment.

i was just going to offer to tell you the good places to go. My local knowledge of Texas is unsurpassed.

I wonder if objects shrink rapidly when they enter the Austin border

I'll have to tele you when I get some information (hmm maybe I'm just going to lose a kidney?)

not that i am aware of though the embargo has made the Austin dollar weak of late. Be sure to exchange your currency back to American dollars before exiting the wall no other currency exchange in the states takes Austin dollars.

you don't think i would be that greedy to steal your kidney. then again i am a college student and need money.

I live in Austin, it's nice. UT is good, but massive. 6th street is good; go watch the show at Esther's Follies (http://www.esthersfollies.com/), it's great. If you have specific questions, just ask.

From what my relatives who have attended UT have told me, while Austin itself is fairly liberal, the school is conservative. There was a student group that had a professor fired a few years back for dismissing Creationism (The student group being Young Conservatives of America mind you) .

But yeah, it's a great place to live with plenty of entertainment venues around and within a short drive to San Marcos or San Antonio.

It's interesting how when you hear those first two things, they're usually(in my experience anyways)followed by the third.

I hear they are planning a riverwalk like San Antonio. That would be very cool.

I was down in S.A a year or two back and I took the riverwalk. It actually was pretty nice, if Austin gets one, it'll be an attraction. Texas is one of my favorite places to visit, if I were to move somewhere, it'd be there.

that's a liberal school for Texas. the rest of the Universities the student groups would be entitled to execute him.

Actually I was just thinking, what are the bad parts of town? There's not really any bad parts of town. East side is somewhat seedier with a few places you probably don't want to be after dark, but there isn't anywhere that is actually owned by gangs like in some other cities.

Thanks. Not that I'm that worried I live in a (relatively)shitty part of town now, just better to know what I'm in for when/if I'm looking at apartments.
