Netiquette

Do people ignore basic netiquette? Does it bother you? Which offenses offend you most? Does netiquette matter?

Are there areas where you are unsure of proper netiquette?

I'm confused about the netiquette of "friending". If someone sends me a friend request on facebook, and I loathe them.....is ignoring the friend request rude? Do I have to friend them? They are quite aware that I'm on facebook often, being a friend of a friend and all.....and I do have to interact with people they interact with even though I don't personally have to interact with them anymore (thank FSM!)......

It bothers me when people invent pointless neologisms like netiquette. Etiquette was good enough to go from face-to-face meetings to letters, telephones, government arrangements, etc.
I don't like how everyone on the Internet feels at liberty to invent new words.

No it is not rude to ignore them. You have no obligation to befriend them.

It's just like the real world; if you don't like someone, you can ignore them. You have the power.

Then again... I don't do Facebook or any of that social network garbage as I am a rather anti-social creature. Chances are, I'm way offbase. :$

If you don't like them why do you care if they consider you rude? Hell you ought cultivate that to lessen the need to avoid them in future.

You aren't a fan of portmanteau? I love them. I make up my own to annoy my husband.

Not really, if you don't like them or are never going to see them again than it hardly matters if you deny the friend request.

I personally only accept people I know and like otherwise into the reject bin you go. It probably explains my low friend count but at least I know all of my 205 friends rather than not knowing my 1,026 friends.

I've rejected several friend requests from people whom I dislike, even when I see them every day. I see no reason to pretend I like someone when I don't. I also have no qualms with unfriending people if a friendship goes sour. "Friends" on Facebook are called that for a reason, and if you're not friends, then you shouldn't be on the Web either.

I only have 143 friends, but 126 of them I interact with at least once a week. The others are out of town friends who I talk to via internet weekly, although most of them daily.

My husband has over 1000 friends, but he friended everyone he's ever gone to school with......I don't even remember the names of my first grade class. All my friends are recent.

I've got just over 100 friends and don't feel bad at all about not accepting anymore. Some of the people never talk to me in the office about work, so why should I care to be spammed with their silly updates and invitations.
Like Smunkee I can't remember most of my school friends names (it was a while ago since I last saw most of them)
I do find it an easy way to catch up with friends abroad and really enjoy looking through their photos (is that a bit stalkerish?)

Yeah well you know, hey if those are the people you want, and our your friends you might as well add them without adding people you dislike and or don't even know.

As for your husband sometimes he may annoy me if it is people he has met before than fair enough, not that I would ever do that but each to his own. What really annoys me is when people just add friends of friends simply to get their numbers up, I get friend requests and I am thinking to myself, "Have I ever met you?" The answer is usually no, they have just requested an add simply because I know one of my friends and they are living in Canada or something, so no I don't add them, it annoy me when I get those requests.

I agree here. What annoys me even more are all those absolutely inane applications that are being spammed around nowadays. I've actually gone as far as unfriending people because they spammed me with too many. It's disgusting.

There are like 2 cool apps on facebook, and 1 of them pisses me off......

I hate with a passion that when I signed on today I had 43 requests from the same person for the same app. Things like this are why my daughter calls it spambook.

I've done the same thing many times - I don't want to join their clan wars just so they can get some extra imaginary credits for recruiting me

The only apps I use widely are Scrabble and Wordscraper - I enjoy chatting to foreign players (mostly Canadian it seems) and getting a few good challenging games going

Also, I just got an email from someone with "stationary" and it was bright and ugly and they had glitter text in their signature and a full 640X280 photo in their signature as well.

They can suck it.

Emails should not have backgrounds, glitter text or embedded photographs. Because I said so, that's why.

I've never heard of wordtwist, but it sounds like the sort of game I'd enjoy.

How could we get a NSG/Facebook wordgame group started without losing all our annonimity?

I only have 28 friends on facebook. If someone who I only know vaguely tries to add me, I always click no. If we hardly ever talk in real life, why on Earth would I possibly want to add you to a list of my friends? If it were a list entiteld "acquaintances" or "people who I have seen, but can't remember their name", then fine. That not being the case, sod off :p

You'll have to tell me where GM is (I'm a bit of a newbie). I'm we can get something sorted (if we can first agree on which version of the dictionary to use....UK of course:wink:)

Thats pretty impressive. If you sleep 8 hours a day thats 112 hours remaining in the week. If you interact with 126 friends thats one friend every 55 minutes of your waking life 7 days a week 365 days a year.

One of the msot annoying thigns is partially-censored words. For example, suppose someone is worried that the word "water" may be offensive. Typing "water" is okay. Typing "*****" is also acceptable. But if they go around typing "w*ter", they need a good smacking.

Agreed, especially if the censorship is religious in nature. Do they seriously think they're off the hook for making the "u" in "fuck" an asterisk? I'm pretty sure that "omniscient" can see through all four asterisks.

I routinely deny friend requests from people I don't know, or don't like, here, and on my rarely used Myspace account. I don't consider it rude. I approach the way I do things on the internet when it comes to interaction the same way i would in person. Don't cross me, I won't cross you. I will never set out to hurt someone's feelings or to be mean, even if I hate a person's guts, but when they try to do so to me they will either find themselves blowing hot air at someone who suddenly isn't there, or receive repayment with interest.
