Marijuana use may increase the risk of developing testicular cancer, in particular a more aggressive form of the disease, according to a U.S. study published on Monday.

The study of 369 Seattle-area men ages 18 to 44 with testicular cancer and 979 men in the same age bracket without the disease found that current marijuana users were 70 percent more likely to develop it compared to nonusers.

The risk appeared to be highest among men who had reported smoking marijuana for at least 10 years, used it more than once a week or started using it before age 18, the researchers wrote in the journal Cancer.

Stephen Schwartz of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, one of the researchers, said the study was the first to explore marijuana's possible association with testicular cancer.

"This is the first study to look at this question, and by itself is not definitive. And there's a lot more research that would have to be done in order to be more confident that marijuana use really is important in a man's risk of developing testicular cancer," Schwartz said in a telephone interview.

The study found the increased risk appeared to be in the form called nonseminoma testicular cancer. It accounts for 40 percent of cases and can be more aggressive and more difficult to treat, Schwartz said.

Experts are unsure about the causes of testicular cancer, which often strikes men in their 20s and 30s. The disease is seen more commonly in men who have had an undescended testicle or have a family history of testicular cancer.

The disease usually responds well to treatment and has a five-year survival rate of about 96 percent, according to the American Cancer Society.

About 8,000 men in the United States are diagnosed with testicular cancer per year, and there are about 140,000 U.S. men alive who have survived the disease, the group said.

The researchers said they were not sure what it was about marijuana that may raise the risk. Chronic marijuana use also can have effects on the male reproductive system including decreased sperm quality, they said.

Yes, but if I'm monitoring multiple forums/email accounts/threads/etc., then I'd have to close a tab I'm not done with, only to reopen it when I next want to check it, which is a lot of hassle. Before I start, I've never tried the stuff.

Speaking as a trained scientist there are several other facts that are needed in order to assess that article.

For a start, everybody dies of something.

Now that we've got that sorted, how many people die of this, and how many are treated and live ? Now what are the equivalent figures for tobacco related cancers adjusted for the number of users ?

In short, ok so the study tells me that starting to smoke pot before your gonads have finished maturing and continuing to do so on a regular basis for more than a decade increases your chances of exiting this world through a particularly unpleasant disease. But against that must be set the way you'd exit it if you had not smoked the stuff.

And that is not on the agenda of the people behind this report, is it ?

Doesn't marijuana provide benefits for people with Alzheimer's? I figure if you're suffering from that, a marginally higher risk of a rare testicular cancer is worth it. Of course, considering tobacco drastically increases your risk of lethal lung cancer it doesn't even provide any justification to keep it illegal.

Studies have shown that the food coloring agent Yellow 5, which is mostly used in yellowish-green drinks like Mountain Dew, can be linked to a lower sperm count. Mountain Dew has a lot of Yellow 5 compared to other similarly-colored drinks.

There was a lot of speculation about shrinking balls, shrinking penises, lower sperm count, less effective sperm, etc. In the end I think the only one "confirmed" is the lower sperm count.

Can't find a link, but apparently Yellow 5 can also be linked to ADHD (http://www.thedailygreen.com/healthy-eating/eat-safe/food-colorings-47020907).

Mmm, interesting, not that I know a lot about ADHD but aren't children born with it rather than developing it? I am not to sure about ADHD despite having it I suppose I just got distracted on other things whenever I started to look into it

It could be that kids who do not have the genetic disposition for ADHD are being diagnosed as having it because of the effects of the dyes? I dunno.

Yeah I know MSG is in quite a lot of stuff, though a lot of companies aren't using it as much anymore (at least in Australia), but my mum is allergic to it so when growing up it was something I didn't have much of.

If it is something that concerns you (and you may know about it already) but a lot of Chinese restaurants use MSG in their sauces and other dishes so you should ask them if they use it and what dishes, KFC also has it as part of the original recipe.
