Yes, the ice is supposed to do that, it doesn't have a choice in the matter, it's inanimate and must obey the laws of physics.

The people, on the other hand-they were just being stupid.

Stupid? on what basis - because they didn't know ahead of time that an 8 mile chunk of ice would break off?

You knew, of course, since you're not stupid - so why didn't you warn anyone? Are you admitting culpability here? I think you are!

Helicopters were participating in the rescue, Lanier said, including those from the Canadian Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard, Ohio State University

Waitaminute, are you accusing me of being a member of the Bush administration?

How smart is it, to say "Hey, it's warming up this week, let's go play on the ICE!" without checking the depth of the ice that you're going to be playing on?

How do we know they didn't? This was an 8 mile chunk of ice, it's not like just foolishly walking over a thin patch. There was in fact no way to check the depth of all that ice and its unreasonable to expect that the whole thing will break away.

They were referring to the Ohio State University Medical Center helicopter. The medical helicopters are also used for search and rescue when they are not tied up doing hospital transfers or field EMS calls.

I don't know. The fact they had to put boards over the large cracks in the ice so the could drive onto it may have been a clue that not all was well.

I would imagine it does something similar every late winter to spring.
Now it seems to have come early but with the reason that can not be named all over the news the last decade or so i would approach ice with caution.

Wind from the south. Warm. Ice tends to fracture in that condition, and anyone with any brains and experience in moving about on lake ice knows you don't do it when the temperatures warm up.

The depth of the ice isn't the issue. It's subject to fracture no matter its thickness.

I would admit, me not knowing anything about frozen lakes and such, would find the need for bridgebuilding on a frozen lake a major clue as to what ice conditions are...

There were public radio advisories as well as weather signs that would have indicated the risks, according to the article. Not to mention the fact that these guys built makeshift bridges to cross floes that were already breaking up to go deeper into the lake.

In summary, yes, they were stupid. As stupid as people who think that "Warning: Electrified fence" means "Touch me! I dare you!"

Okay, someone died, so now it's a sport.

The only time it's really okay to enjoy the chaos, is when lives are not at stake.

Among the hundreds of people who went fishing Saturday were Gary and David Vaughn of Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania.

They told the Plain Dealer that they set up a shanty about 7 a.m. and didn't come back out until 11 a.m., when they saw a crowd gathered at the edge of the ice. It was then that they knew they were in trouble.

"When we were over there waiting to be rescued, we feared the ice would just break up under us," Gary Vaughn, 47, told the newspaper. "I feared for my life."

I know them... they should have drowned.
