"I feel sorry every time I see Cha fail. When she passes, I'll make a memorial tablet myself and give it to her," Park Jung-seok, a traffic police officer at the agency, told the Korea Times newspaper.

Applicants must score at least 60 on the written exam before they can get behind the wheel for a driving test. Choi says she's scored as high as 50.

50? 50? She's failing the written test? I thought asians were supposed to be good at written tests.

There should totally be a cut off at, say 300.

That's a bit harsh. 500 is much more fair.

If it takes more than a few attempts at passing your driving licence, you really don't belong on the road at all...

Ok so was it her ethnicity, sex, or age? "The 68-year-old has spent $3,000 on fees for the test, he said."

Now, realize that is only the written exam and if she ever passes that, how many cars will she destroy taking her driving practical even 10 times?:eek:

Only when it involves numbers not questions that ask how far do you drive down the road with the indicator on? Or When the speed limit is 60 how fast can you go?

Why call her Asian? She's South Korean. That's like reporting a woman from Wales, for example, as a European woman.

SEOUL, South Korea — A woman in South Korea who has taken the written exam required for a driver's license nearly every day since 2005 has failed again — but is hoping attempt No. 772 will be the charm.

The aspiring driver took her first test in April 2005, according to Choi Young-chul, an official at the North Jeolla Province driver's license agency in Jeonju, 150 miles south of Seoul.

She has taken the test a record 771 times, most recently on Monday, but has yet to pass. She said she plans to take the test again but did not say when, he said Thursday.

The 68-year-old has spent $3,000 on fees for the test, he said. Applicants must score at least 60 on the written exam before they can get behind the wheel for a driving test. Choi says she's scored as high as 50.

I blame it on the Korean laws.
April 2005 to February 2009, this makes... uuhh... 3 years and 10 months... that is about 1400 days. 771 times in 1400 days is MORE THAN 1 ATTEMPT EVERY 2 DAYS ff'ss!

That's just stupid. How can the law allow to take exams continuously? You fail once, you wait and study again. Clearly the Korean laws don't enforce people to wait and study for the exam, thus allowing many people to pass on mere luck.
Also, JUST 3000$ for 771 attempts... this makes just 3.98 $ a test. Isn't it a bit too little?

I don't know about other countries, but here in Italy:
1.You must pay about 120€ just to attempt the written exam. Minimum level for pass is 26/30, and you can't take the exam before one month from the date of first appliance.
2.If you fail the written exam, you must wait at least one month to take another.
3.Once you've passed the written exam, you must undergo the practical exam - and you aren't allowed to take it without first taking at least 10 hours of practical lessons with a certified instructor (at about 50 € / h).
4.If you fail the practical exam, you must wait at least one month to take another.
5.If you fail to get the licence within 6 months from the date you first applied for licence, the validity of the written exam expires. Go back to step 1.

Maybe here we pay and wait too much... but still we have too many cretins on the road.

Ontario has really strict rules and yet we have way too many morons on the road who can't figure out how to drive. It's absolutely mind boggling that these people haven't been killed or killed others because of their inability to exercise a duty of care to others on the road.

This is despite the fact that we have a graduated licensing system. It costs initially $100 to get you G1 license, which is the lowest, most basic class of license (on par with the M1 for motorcycles). It just requires a written test and a vision test. After that, the person has to wait a year before taking the next level of test. That's if they don't take practical lessons, which reduce the waiting time to 10 months. They are allowed to drive but only if the other person has a G license; had it for three years and they have a zero blood alcohol level.

Then there's the second level... the G2, or M2 depending on what you want to drive. The motorcycle class license does have some different rules but in general, still equally if not just as asinine as those for the G class license which are for personal vehicles, and not commercial vehicles or buses, which require a special license in addition to your G. The G2 lets you drive at night; on the highway, but you can't have any alcohol in your blood. It also costs $100 to take the test to upgrade from G1 to G2, and the test isn't given by the Ministry of Transportation. It was outsourced, and it's rather common for people to be flunked on certain routes. It's also common for people in Toronto to take their G2 test in one of the GTA municipalities or even go out as far as Aurora or Orillia in order to avoid getting screwed over.

Once you get your "G" you're able to drive any time, any where. However, at one point the government was willing to put age restrictions on that class of license. I can't remember if it will still go ahead, but it would have prevented large groups of young people from being in the same car even if sober. Once again, it costs $100 to take the G test.

So, it costs $300 total, never mind the cost for the class time. Class time is 25 hours, with some of it spent sitting in a tiny cramped classroom going over driving procedure and the road rules, despite the irony that in order to even get your G1 you need to know the rules of the road and score 40/50 in order to even qualify for your G1; you need to have read the stupid manual that costs $12 (it was cheaper when I bought it). This takes at least 3 years. Of course, if you fail each element, you can pay to immediately retest. It's $10 to retake the written, and $25 for each of the driving tests.

Though the law doesn't say taking driving lessons is mandatory, it puts pressure on people to do so because with that piece of paper, one can get a reduced rate of insurance once they're qualified to drive at the G2 level. At G1, you're driving under someone else's insurance.

Risottia... Italians wait way less than someone in Ontario does. Yet we do have a great number of morons, cretins and other misfits on the road who is forced to take a driving test again would no doubt fail spectacularly.

...I've known people who needed three years for the B licence (cars)...

Anyway, the general problem is: how to curb the moron number ("moron number"... it has a quantum physics-style sound, like "baryon number"...).

The problem is that if two morons collide, the kynetic energy of the released submoronical particles is too high for the moron duct, aka motorway. We should invent the antimoron and have a total moron-antimoron annihilation yielding just neutrinos.

South Korean is a subset of Asian. Specificity wasn't necessary.
