"China said Thursday it respected Kyrgyzstan's decision to close the base. The Foreign Ministry statement marked a rare official comment on the domestic issues of other nations, underlining Beijing's intense concern over the presence of U.S. troops in the region.

China shares a 450-mile (700-kilometer) -long land border with Kyrgyzstan in its remote far west. Both countries are members of a regional grouping, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, that aims to curb U.S. influence in the area.

China has said repeatedly that it expected the U.S. military presence in Central Asia to be temporary, indicating its concern over looming encirclement by U.S. bases across Asia."

Russia and America get into shooting, looks like China will side with Russia. I thougth Obama was supposed to magically fix this by making everyone on earth, "close friends" of America. Doesn't look like that's happening.
In any case, if something does happen, he'll probably just kow tow to the Russian demands.

Now, when was the last time they taught Russian and Chinese in American schools?

this would be a lie

China has said repeatedly that it expected the U.S. military presence in Central Asia to be temporary

well it was, the base was officially supposed to last only 2 years iirc

Russia and America get into shooting, looks like China will side with Russia

China doesn't work like that you could have a case of China not wanting to be encircled but then why would China care about a US airbase when its in China's interest to stabilize Pakistan

You do realize that the base has not been closed right? The parliment has decided to postpone the vote for at least a week while the two sides negotiate!

For those who don't what this is about.

"Russia has appeared open to aiding the U.S. and NATO in Afghanistan by facilitating attempts to find northern alternatives to Pakistani supply lines increasingly threatened by militant attacks. But Moscow also wants to protect what it says as its strategic backyard by blocking the possibility of NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia. Russia has also vehemently opposed U.S. plans to put a missile defense system in the Czech Republic and Poland."

"the base closure poses a serious challenge to the new U.S. administration and President Barack Obama's plan to send up to 30,000 more American forces into Afghanistan this year."

"Medvedev appeared to criticize U.S. efforts on stabilizing Afghanistan,"

He goes on to attack the democratization of Aghanistan.

"After Kremlin talks, the group announced the creation of a joint rapid reaction force that would boost the military dimension to the alliance, which until now has served mostly as a forum for security consultations."

Return of the Soviet Union?

"BTW, we are back." j/k

"The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental international organization founded inShanghaion15 June 2001bysix countries,China,Russia,Kazakhstan,Kyrgystan,TajikistanandUzbekistan. Its member states cover an area of over 30 million km2, or about three fifths ofEurasia, with a population of 1.455 billion, about a quarter of the world's total. Its working languages are Chinese and Russian."

http://www.cfr.org/publication/10883/

"The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)–comprised of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan"

"In recent years, it has risen in stature and scope, making headlines in 2005 when it issued a timeline for U.S. forces to pull out of Uzbekistan. Some experts say the organization has emerged as a powerful anti-U.S. bulwark in the region,"

Iran has requested membership. "Iran is currently one of four observers to the SCO. It requested full membership in March, prompting speculation about the future direction of the SCO."

"Some experts cite a convergence of interests among members in recent years, including improved ties between China and Russia and the perceived threat posed by U.S. forces in the region"

"the SCO is being used by Russia and China as a vehicle to assert their influence in Central Asia and curb U.S. access to the region’s vast energy supplies."

"China and Russia have chafed at the U.S. military presence in Central Asia, an energy-rich region both consider within their sphere of influence. After uprisings in Ukraine, Georgia, and Kyrgyzstan unseated leaders loyal to the Kremlin, Russia has viewed the U.S. presence in post-Soviet states with increasing suspicion. Many in Moscow argue the so-called color revolutions were the work of U.S.-funded nongovernmental organizations. Beijing sees the U.S. military presence along its western border as part of Washington’s strategy to contain China, experts say."

"On July 5, 2005, the SCO issued a declaration implicitly calling for the United States to set a timeline for withdrawing its military forces from Karshi-Khanabad Air Base, located in southern Uzbekistan. "

"The Uzbek government also grew suspicious of U.S. involvement in pro-democracy revolutions in Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan. Hence, the Uzbek government ended its military cooperation with the United States and moved to eject U.S. forces from Karshi-Khandabad. The SCO declaration, most experts say, merely accelerated the withdrawal of U.S. forces, which was completed by the end of 2005."

That was big public relations coup for the members of the SCO, especially the Russians and Chinese exploited it at home.

"Others say a stronger SCO, particularly one with a military component and Iran as a full member, might serve as a check to U.S. interests and ambitions in the region. “An expanded SCO would control a large part of the world’s oil and gas reserves and nuclear arsenal,” David Wall, an expert on the region at the University of Cambridge’s East Asia Institute, told the Washington Times. “It would essentially be an OPEC with bombs.”

Or should we say OPEC with the ability to bomb America. Buy our oil or else!!!!

All interesting. Very interesting.

thats just Russia being Russia they aren't so keen on having anything near their borders after what happened last time

"After Kremlin talks, the group announced the creation of a joint rapid reaction force that would boost the military dimension to the alliance, which until now has served mostly as a forum for security consultations."

the EU also has one of these its made to deal with terrorism and the like

I think you will find that not every grouping is out to get you especially if you somehow think of Kazakhstan as opposed to the US when NATO has been doing operation with the Kazakh's for some time now

http://www.fmprc.gov.cn/eng/topics/sco/t57970.htm

and? things like the WTO rule the world if you think of it like that

"In recent years, it has risen in stature and scope, making headlines in 2005 when it issued a timeline for U.S. forces to pull out of Uzbekistan. Some experts say the organization has emerged as a powerful anti-U.S. bulwark in the region,"

in June, the Karimov government demanded that the US leave within six months, after Washington condemned Uzbek troops for firing on peaceful protesters in the town of Andijan on May 13.

the US bitches about human rights violations and gets kicked out *shrug*

Iran has requested membership. "Iran is currently one of four observers to the SCO. It requested full membership in March, prompting speculation about the future direction of the SCO."

and India is the most likely future member which throws any chance of some pro-Taliban alliance out

"Some experts cite a convergence of interests among members in recent years, including improved ties between China and Russia and the perceived threat posed by U.S. forces in the region"

oh noes China and Russia are solving their border disputes!!1

"China and Russia have chafed at the U.S. military presence in Central Asia, an energy-rich region both consider within their sphere of influence. nothing but an opinion

"On July 5, 2005, the SCO issued a declaration implicitly calling for the United States to set a timeline for withdrawing its military forces from Karshi-Khanabad Air Base, located in southern Uzbekistan. "

you mean a intergovernmental body on the region sorted out a time line for withdrawal? *gasp* you might want to watch out for the EU then

China doesn't really like Russia either. The enemy of my enemy (incidentally, the US is not the enemy of China or Russia) is not necessarily my friend.

I thougth Obama was supposed to magically fix this by making everyone on earth, "close friends" of America. Doesn't look like that's happening.

Ignoring the exaggerations here, Obama has only been in office for a few weeks. It'll take years to fix the damage the Bush administration caused, if it can be fixed.

In any case, if something does happen, he'll probably just kow tow to the Russian demands.

There's a huge difference between compromise and "kow-towing" despite what the last administration said.

Now, when was the last time they taught Russian and Chinese in American schools?

Seriously now, you're just being silly and you know it.

America and Russia aren't going to war, China wouldn't get involved if they did, and Obama's been president for a couple of weeks. He won't make everyone his best buddy like he said he would, but he won't start a war with them.
