How are we supposed to know? Probably 90% of posters here are male. So unless the opposite can be clearly inferred from their posts, chances are that 90% of the time it's correct to assume that a new poster is male.

Sometimes people will make an effort to write "they" or "he/she" as long as they don't know someone's gender yet but mostly it's just easier to go with "he" and change to "she" once it turns out you were wrong.

I always avoid pronoun use or use "they" until I know the gender of the person I'm replying to online. About half my friends are transgender, genderqueer etc so quite often I need to take this approach in real life until I've found out what pronoun people refer. There's a couple of people I know who from one day to the next keep changing whether they want to be called "he" "she" "they" or "it". Thats when it makes the transition (ha!) from being fine to slightly irritating.

Not always; at the very least it depends which websites you're talking about.

Anyway, I'm guessing it's because people who don't know the gender and don't think about it don't bother to say "he/she" and instead say "he" by default. They probably don't intend to get your gender mixed up, and I'm not sure they're even necessarily thinking about it.

To the OP: it's just a numbers game. Most of the people here are male, and so many people tend to assume you're male by default until you've been around long enough that people know one way or the other. Pretty much all of us girls have gone through the "wait....you're a SHE?!" phase at one point or another. :p

Sounds somewhat non sequitir if you ask me. The OP (assuming that means "original post") said that she had been called "he" twice; that wasn't much, and even THEN she didn't say it was boys who called her "he"; Poliwanacraca said that girls go through a "wait you're a she" phase, which suggests that even girls wouldn't expect to find other girls on the Internet.

I repeat, on what do you base the association of being male with thinking there are no girls on the Internet?

I think so.

Although this is obviously a blatant generalisation, where I have thought a poster is female, it's because they tend to be more passionate in debate without coming across just as angry. Often male posters are very logical and detached, but also rant. Possibly due to anger being an emotion that it is 'ok' to express in public as a man....

o.0 Saying "he" is gender unspecific. Unless they're going on and on about your penis, they're probably trying to be neutral.

I'm really not sure why you need to discuss this further.

Whoa, my nation is still alive!

I thought I'd have to revive it just to respond to this.

I don't know why people think you are male. It's very odd. When I was a noob I only posted a couple of times before everyone knew I was female. But that was before I'd posted pictures. Also, prior to anyone knows about my epic cleavage, I think. Although, to be fair, I am kind of fond of my cleavage, so I do make reference to it more often than I think I realize. And the boys of NSG, being as clever and horny as they are, picked up on it immediately. ;)

So, have you posted pics of your cleavage? This generally gets the guys to remember that you are female.

Also, I freely admit to being a spammer. And while there was a time in my youth when I read 12 pages of a thread before replying, I am past that stage. So, forgive me if I'm repeating what others have said.

I noticed you mentioned using emoticons, which somehow is meant to indicate that you are more emotional, which thusly means you must be female. I would like to address this concept further.

Have you admitted to being a dancer, preferably a ballerina? Or, failing that, a cheerleader? I mean, obviously men participate in the sports, but they are feminine enough that if you'd indicated a interest in these, we could narrow you down to "female" or "gay male."
Do you cook or bake? Making tacos doesn't count, because everyone knows LG can make tacos, and he is the embodiment of masculine virility. How about something more feminine, scones maybe? Tea doesn't count, because British guys can do that.
Do you scrapbook or take on arts and crafts projects? Nothing with a hammer or nail, mind, because we've already established that you are a good girl, and who knows where dealing with such innuendo could lead you?
Are you an English, History, or some other liberal arts major? After all, my personal theory is that there are no girls on the internet because wimminz don't know maths or science, and generally the internet attracts computer/math/science nerds. Or, better yet, do you not go to school because women belong in the kitchen?

Finally, have you made any of the guys here a sandwich yet, or at least poured them a beer? Guys obviously know that the maker of their sandwiches are women. D'uh.

I hope my advice has helped you see some ways of ensuring that the members of NSG remember not only your sex, but your gender as well!

If you need any further assistance from me, I'll be in the library with Iffy, trying to get him to demonstrate some more differences between men and women for me. :)

I mean, I doubt you'd want to, but you can come study with us, too!

Behaved is really making a big fuss about nothing, isn't he? Can't he just chill out? What's his problem? What could possibly annoy him so much? Maybe his testosterone is getting to him?

Can I bring a friend? Libraries ought to have more than one private, book-filled nook, after all...

But I think that this might mean that I won't get to study Poli, if she's in another private nook!

Wait, I think I just realized that mayhap the private nook does not so much belong to the library, and that you desire more "books" to fill up yours. Which is totally understandable.

Just tell him to leave the catsuit at home. What a mood-killer! I have always had a bizarre love of Batman masks, though. . .

I think Behaved is a girl. Boys wouldn't throw hissyfits over something so inconsequential*.

*NB: This is a big fat lie, I got into a huge argument after work, trying to explain to my coworker why gender is a socially constructed concept after he tried to argue that people thinking he was gay would be "emasculating." I was convinced he was straight after that, because only a straight guy would be so dense.

No, a specific 17-year-old girl from NC. Who asked the forum if she seemed more like a male or a female, and ended up being declared most like a pancake.

To be fair, she did post a picture of herself with a pancake obscuring her face.

wtf? I've lived here my whole life and never heard that before.

once upon a time there was another NSGer who, also apparently seems upset that the forum had not figured out she was a girl, and wanting to know how many thought her male, posted a poll, asking "what am I?" with the obvious choices of "male", and "female", as well as a joke throwaway option of "pancake".

Pancake won, overwhelmingly.

You're assuming that the face was hers and that she was not, in fact, the pancake.

That's basically what the "heh" was for. I've never seen scones as effeminate, and I assume a more fitting food would've been strawberry shortcake, or something along those lines. It must be said that I also make epic scones, and will soon be making yet another batch after I devour the rest of the ones I've got.

I use only white flour, sugar, heavy cream, butter, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Out of this world.

Man, if she weren't underage, and a dear friend of mine, I would reply "Oh, darling, that wasn't her face that was covered so."

Alas, I feel it would be inappropriate and possibly disrespectful, and I'd hate to incur Pancake Rage.
