Everything You Wanted To Know About Canada

I was watching the Rick Mercer Report here in the great white north this evening when this little gem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi1yhp-_x7A) of his popped up. Along with the rest of the world Canada did get smacked upside the head while the economy took a nosedive, and along with the rest of the world we cheered along USA and their new leader but amidst all that we still had concerns regarding our own government. Mainly, how the fuck does it work?

Thoughts? (Other than the ones of ah and wonder at Saige Dragon actually creating a thread of some meaning, rather than merely wasting space on the internet with his rather lame and off topic comments)

I learned most of that in high school.

I learned most of that in high school.

As did I. Does that mean 75% of Canadians need to go back to high school before they are allowed to vote then? I'd hope if they'd all just watch this video, that would be sufficient.

Probably, but then I'm not even Canadian.

To most Canadians, apparently not.

You know, this is a fantastic piece...it should be mandatory viewing before exiting high school, just to ensure folks are clear on this.

It should be mandatory viewing right before kids stand up to sing the national anthem in class every morning. Drill it into their soft little skulls so it never ever leaves, then maybe we won't be living in a country filled with vapid people claiming they voted for Canada's new PM.

Only thing I know about Canada is this:
They created: Maple Syrup and Hockey (2 of the best things ever)
and they also created: Celine Dion (THE ANTI-CHRIST!)

So overall.. its' a wash.

(LOL, j/k all you crazy canucks!, except for the Celine Dion part, that is true!)

Quite true. I tell people the only differences between Michigan and Canada are that we have guns and they have universal healthcare.

No, we have guns and universal healthcare - you guys just have more guns ...and flamethrowers.

You hardly have guns, so it doesn't count. Every gun I own would be illegal there. You can't even have nice airsoft guns.

Actually, it's a lot like the US, gunwise.

If you're in a rural area, guns are no big deal. People by and large follow the laws (especially the ones against murder by firearm).

If you're in a city, there are more gun laws, but the criminals don't give a shit, and shoot people anyway (think Toronto or New York City - very similar in that it's drug/gang related violence with firearms that are already illegal to possess).

Here in the US, half of all firearm violence and half of all firearm murder is done by African-Americans TO African-Americans - if you removed their statistics, we would be on a par with Switzerland in terms of gun violence.

There's something wrong in the inner cities of the US, and I would bet in the inner city of Canada's larger cities - remove that problem, and there's not much left to complain about.

I wasn't talking about gun violence and such, I'm talking about what sorts of guns you're allowed to own. They're very Californian in that regard.

edit:

I know you can have guns there, I've taken a .30-30 to Northern Ontario to go hunting a couple of times. However, my WASR-10 most certainly wouldn't make it across the border.

Well, yes. But that's never bothered me too much. I'm far more dangerous with a bolt action rifle in a high velocity hunting caliber than I am with an "assault rifle" in a lightweight caliber.

Yeah, I'm not all that bothered by it either, but I would be bothered by being unable to buy many high-end airsoft guns, as I rather enjoy airsoft.

For once we agree. A bolt action rifle is as deadly a weapon as you'll ever need for 'hunting'.

Besides if your hunting for meat you don't want to fill the deer with lead! You want one nice clean shot which does the job.

It's all I ever needed for combat.

If I can hit you 800 meters away, and you only have an AK (that isn't worth spit past 100 yards), you're helpless and I've got an easy kill.

eek don't shoot me I don't even have a gun (right now). Besides I'm on your side ...

Another good point about rifles as opposed to other weapons is that you only hit what your intending to. A lot better for the civilian population than just spraying bullets around everywhere.

But as for Canada - well not too much armed combat going on these days in Canada so hunting rifles are really the only weapons I think you'll have a use for.

Yeah, not much here either apart from Detroit

My primary concern when buying a firearm isn't how effective it would be in a firefight. Maybe I'm just weird.

My point is that I'm effective (more effective) with weapons that some anti-gun legislators believe are ineffective, and that I am actually less effective with weapons that they believe are very effective.

Too bad people like Pelosi, Schumer, and Feinstein have no fucking clue as to what constitutes an effective weapon.

I don't really know but I suspect its because a lot of anti-gun people don't actually shoot guns so they don't really know about them...

I actually don't have any experience with weapons other than bolt action rifles but they seem plenty deadly to me.

mind you I'm not interesting using one against a person... just the occasional deer and then only for the meat.

It is indeed very silly. As though a 5.45x39 with a bayonet mount were somehow deadlier than a .30-06.
