Serial Killers

So, lately I've been looking up and reading about Serial Killers on Wikipedia. Now, I am not a sadistic person. I do not like torture and don't think I would inflict pain willingly on someone. I just find serial killers fascinating. I want to know your favorite stories about them, your favorite fictional or non-fictional depicitions/stories about them.
I personally like the stories of Charlie Manson b/c hes so crazy he's fucking hilarious.

There's no need to explain yourself... look at t.v. and movies: there's always been demand for stories about killers. The weirder the better, in fact.
I remember seeing an interview with Edmund Kemper on YouTube, which might still be there. That guy defines crazy for me. Killed his grandparents as a boy, got out of the nuthouse at 18, killed a bunch of hitchhikers around Santa Cruz, eventually got caught for killing and later decapitating his mother. The guy was just hopelessly nuts from the beginning.
I like how the killer known as "Son of Sam" was caught because he didn't pay a parking ticket.

I like Zodiac because he taunted the police with clues written in puzzles, and he never got caught, even when calling into a TV show. He played with fire and did not get burned.
Fictional, Jigsaw, 'nuff said.

Read part of a book once that said that he was connected with the "true" Necronomicon featured in the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. Freaked the fucking shit out of me, so I had to quit reading it.

That contradicts what I heard about him. The only weird thing about his arrest was that he dropped the murder weapon in his car while being approached by officers on the street. The police nearly let him go for lack of evidence, after forgetting to search his car until the last minute.

Yeah, he was pretty far out there. Killers who target kids, though.. that stuff's hard to read about, even if you think you're used to it. I knew a guy like Fish when I was a kid, a masochist or a pain addict, rather than a serial killer, I mean. Weird stuff.

The BTK Killer was pretty amusing. The guy kills 10 people, taunts the police, writes letters to the newspapers, and gets away with it.
Then, 15 years later he gets caught because he sends a floppy disk with his name and place of work on it to a TV station. The best part is that the information was on a deleted document, so he actually thought he was being clever. DAMN YOU, NEW MEDIA!!
Er. Well, actually it was a floppy, so it sort of old media, but whatever.

Otherwise...
I don't think it's possible for me to have a favourite serial killer, what am I to admire or favour, their technique?
However, slightly related...
5 Free will
If you want to keep your sanity, look away now. Neuroscientists are almost convinced that free will is an illusion. Their experiments show that our brains allow us to think we are controlling our bodies, but our movements begin before we make a conscious decision to move. Some researchers have already been approached to testify in court that the defendant is not to blame for anything they did. A scary legal future awaits.
It's not their fault.

It's not their fault.
You could make that argument, but even assuming that strict determinism is true, it wouldn't mean you couldn't hold people accountable for their actions. We take steps to limit the effects of natural disasters, after all (an example of something no one canbe blamed for); even if you could find a reason for someone's horrific behavior, you'd still have to act to incapacitate the person to prevent future incidents.

Or rehabilitate them, but obviously no one is suggesting that serial killers just be allowed to roam the streets because they can't help it.
Although, what the article he quoted sounds like it is suggesting is an old idea that was rejected during the Victorian era. I forget what it is called, but basically, not only free will, but consciousness also is an illusion generated by the bodies actions. So one's thoughts and desires are regarded just like engine exhaust, useless and ineffectual.

It's not their fault.
Let's turn this around then. Rather than it "being their fault" they are the fault. Defective, dangerous human beings. For the sake of security for the rest of society, they are to be culled immediately.
No more therapy and rehabilitation for these "not my fault" criminals since if they can't control it, therapy and rehabilitation is a waste. A bullet will suffice instead.

No one has mentioned Jeffrey Dahmer, who liked to drug his prey, normally young gay men, and then eat them and keep their bones and skulls in his refrigerator. He is dead now (killed in prison), but he was a pretty weird and strangely normal looking and sounding dude--like BTK looked and appeared normal. The Zodiac killer, on the other hand, looks as nutty as he is, and it amazes me that women were attracted to him and one even married him. YIKES!

Ed Gein committed at least two murders (that's what he was convicted for, anyway). He also possibly killed his brother, which would qualify him as a serial killer (at least 3 murders over the course of at least 30 days).
No one can match good 'ol Jack, and no one ever will.
Wasn't there something recently about Jack possibly being a woman?
In 2006, an Australian scientist, Ian Findley used swabs from letters allegedly sent to London police from the Ripper to attempt to build a DNA profile of the killer. Findlay, a professor of molecular and forensic diagnostics, claims to have developed a process by which he could extract DNA up to 160 years old from a strand of hair or single cell.
Although the results were "inconclusive" and not forensically reliable, a partial DNA profile was constructed. This led Findlay to believe the Ripper may be female.
In fact, one female was suspected during the Ripper investigations. Mary Pearcey became a suspect after murdering her lover's wife with a similar modus operandi as the Ripper. Mary was convicted and hanged in 1890.

That's what is so magical about it, almost anyone can succeed!
Didn't Ted Bundy do his 20 odd murders over the course of several years?
He confessed to 30, but he possibly committed many more. It is also possible that he committed fewer, and simply padded his count by confessing to things he didn't do. Serial killers are tricky like that.
That's why, if I ever start killing people, I am going to keep detailed and exacting records. There will be no questions about my final score.
