Whats your favorite variety of Doughnut? Who bakes 'em?

I like the chocolate iced ones with the frosting filling. I also make my own doughnuts at home out of mashed potatoes and covered in powerded sugar or cinnimon sugar.

I love cinnamon doughnuts, particularly the ones made by the Lions Club, $1 each or 5 for $3.

I also enjoy the sprinkle doughnuts made by Villis and to a lesser extent but still enjoy them the doughnuts made by Dounut King.

HOW??? How, how, how? How do you make doughnuts out of mashed potatoes? How, damn you? Recipe, please. :D

I love me a doughnut. I like the plain "old fashioneds" and some variations upon the "old fashioned" including chocolate iced, powdered sugar coated, and cinnamon sugar coated. I also like cream-filled doughnuts. I'm not a huge fan of sugar glazing (on doughnuts or anything else) or of fruit/jam-filled doughnuts, but I won't say no to a decent doughnut even if it's filled with jam and then sugar glazed.

The only ones I'll generally pass on are the ones that are so loaded up with coatings and toppings that they are more candy than doughnut. I hate Krispy Kremes, btw, and fell out of love with Dunkin' Donuts when they went low fat and high fructose. There is one doughnut shop that took over the mini-store in the subway station by me in Somerville, Mass, that I think is called "Doughnut-Doughnut" (catchy, especially as I only think that's its name), which makes doughnuts that actually taste like they are made out of food. I pick up a couple of those now and then. And there was this place in Vermont that made old fashioneds with apple cider in the recipe. Man, those were good.

I miss Bess Eaton, and their double chocolate old fashioned doughnuts (chocolate cake doughnut that's glazed, then chocolate frosted). I once had a bet (in college) that I couldn't eat a dozen in one sitting. It took me a while (and a lot of milk), but I did it. I made $20 because of Bess Eaton's double chocolate old fashioned doughnuts. :D

I'm home for a couple hours, so as promised I broke out the recipe, its not the most healthy thing but these are good.

1 cup sugar
1 cup of mashed potatoes with no milk
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
3 tsp baking powder (heaping is ok)
3 cups of flower
2 tblsp butter (or substitute)

Add salt, sugar, and mashed potatoes into bowl and mix together. Beat the eggs separately of the mix and add milk to them, stir until thoroughly mixed. Add the baking powder flower and butter to the potato mix and and pour the milk egg mixture on top, mix thoroughly. (for some reason these do not come out right if you toss it all together in the bowl o.o)

Then you can either pat the dough down and cut doughnut shapes out, or just make small doughnut balls out of it. You deep fry them at 350 degrees F until they turn golden brown and float to the surface. If you want to add powdered sugar or cinnamon to them you should roll them in it as soon as they come out of the deep fryer so that most of it will stick.

This makes a good amount so you might want to adjust more or less.

I am unreasonably fond of doughnuts.

My favorites are the "old fashioned" line. Glazed, chocolate dough and glazed, maple iced, chocolate iced. In my younger days, a stop at Winchell's on payday was standard. A dozen, and four at a sitting with a tall, ice-cold glass of milk. I had to switch to soy to get them out of my diet, because soy and doughnuts do not go together even half as well. Good thing, too, 'cause I'd ballooned to 220 lbs by the time I was 35. 197 now, thanks to soy, yoga and exercise, but still have my doughnutty weakness.

If we're not talking home-baked cider doughnuts from Lancaster, PA, then Krispy Kreme originals, right out of their oven.

After that -- an apple-and-cinnamon "air" donut from Dunkin' Donuts.

An American who can spell Doughnut correctly... I never thought I'd see the day.
There are doughnuts (often bakery or homemade), Donuts (https://www.dunkindonuts.com/) and Donettes (http://www.hostesscakes.com/donettes.asp)(tiny packaged sugar hockey pucks).

There is plenty of precedent for referring to the whole shebang by a brand name -- I believe in the UK they hoover whilst we in the US vacuum. Hoover's a brand name and not a verb in the US.
