What, Me Worried?

So the Postal Service wants to cut costs by delivering five days a week instead of six. For some reason this has people worried - I really can't imagine why. If it means slowing down the rising cost of postage, I'm all for it.

Won't change the amount of delays delivering packages, anyway.

The postal service is becoming irrelevant because there are better alternatives, the solution is to make it less useful so it will become more irrelevant and the alternatives will become even better. Then it can fall headfirst off the edge of the Earth and no one will care.

I don't see what the big deal is. I find it strange that tuesday will be the most likely candidate for the missing day, as one would expect the two days to be right next to one another, but I suppose it's all in the name of efficiency.

If they're going to cut a day, I think it should be Saturday anyway, regardless of the amount of mail, if for no other reason than to bring the Mail service in line with the 5 day work week...

I actually do not find those alternatives to be better. In my experience, the USPS is nearly as reliable as FedEx and, again in my personal experience, way more reliable than UPS (with which I have gone to war too many times). The USPS's system is far more simple for preparing packages than FedEx's and UPS's. The USPS makes recipients jump through far fewer hoops to get mail that must be signed for, if the first delivery attempt is missed. For basic light mail, such as business correspondence, the USPS is much, much less expensive than FedEx or UPS. I know of no services FedEx/UPS offer that the USPS does not, and there are some services that USPS offers that the alternatives don't.

I find the USPS the better way to send paper mail and packages. I will be very sad if it goes belly up.

Very true. If the USPS dies, I guess I'll just have to invent another, the same way Ben Franklin did. Because I WON'T fucking ever use UPS again.

By the way, I should mention, in re the OP, that I don't really mind reducing the service to 5 days/week if that's how much volume they've got, but I worry that won't fix their problems. The service has been sliding due, in my opinion, to bad management ever since it was privatized.

I use a PO Box, so no signing for me.
As for the rest of it, the USPS is good enough right now, but reducing their service by 16.667% isn't really a good step, yes? I was mainly commenting on how they're losing business, and their idea of a solution is to take steps that are guaranteed to chase away more customers. Maybe the gamble will succeed, and they'll come out losing less money than before, but it really isn't a sustainable strategy.
