IMHO is The Macross Movie "Do You Remember Love?"

The Wiki Page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_You_Remember_Love)

I'm serious.

There was a brilliance to the imagery in that movie I've never seen since, and the music matched it perfectly.

Gawd... like in the final battle when Minmei is singing that love song even while the visuals, by contrast, are insanely fast and violent, Hikaru's fighter launching swarms of missiles on its "Death Star Run" mission into Dolza's command ship.... Or the ruined human city as the Macross approaches from the misty horizon while Hikaru and Misa look on...

Back when I was in High School I had a pirated VHS copy that was dubbed in English (badly) and I fell head over heels for that movie.

Sadly, if Wiki is to be believed, there's no DVD version coming to North America in the foreseeable future. I cry.

In fact, that movie has all but ruined Anime as a genre for me for all time. To this day when SciFi Animonday comes on I go  and change the channel. I'm not now, nor have I ever been an Anime fan boy, and ironically it's all because I was ruined by this one film which can never, IMHO, be matched.

(Although I do find Gunsmith Cats to be rather compelling.)

Not seen it, sounds like it may involve giant mecha which is not my thing. Much prefer Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell. But then I have fairly particular tastes when it comes to anime - I hated Paprika but liked Tekkonkinkreet.

I still consider Neon Genesis Evangelion the best anime of all time, but admittedly that is just my opinion. Many have raised some perfectly valid objections and I guess it really depends on a matter of taste, as well as what you're seeking in a show. Of course I am not too familiar with Macross or its sequels apart from this four-part OVA I watched on the Sci-Fi channel some time ago. But now that I am getting tired of Gundam, it probably wouldn't hurt to look into another mecha series, especially one as esteemed as Macross.

I bought the original series on DVD and watched all 6 hours of it in one go.... It was alternatively engrossing and hilarious. Never seen the movie though.

Ghost in the shell I still find haunting, but I always find myself going back to Akira time and time again.

The problem I always had with the original Japanese Macross (remixed as the first third of Robotech in the USA) was the quality of the animation was devastatingly inconsistent. Some episodes were damn near the level of quality of a feature film, while some looked like they would have been more at home in a South Park episode.

The animation of the Macross movie was solid from start to finish.

I didn't want to start a 'thing' with hating on anime in a thread for fans (I know, too late) I hate when people do that. It's just not my thing, no value judgment, but I did remember that particular one from my childhood when I was still trying to convince myself I was into it, and I do remember liking some of the Macross stuff even though I knew it all as Robotech. I should have focused on that instead of me not being into anime, I'm sorry.

I hate to go with the flow, but I'd honestly have to say that Princess Mononoke remains one of the most beautiful stories I've ever seen. The forests came alive like nothing I've ever seen before, even if the message was fairly simple.

As far as what probably has had the most impact on me...well, I'll probably be beaten to death, but Digimon. Even though there are some obviously cringe-inducing moments in that show, it handled a lot of rather mature topics very well and was rather unique in delving into the age of the internet back when lots of people were just being introduced to computers. Recent seasons have been nothing short of bizarre, but the first two are always enjoyable to watch.

That said, I can usually find something in an anime that I'll enjoy and hold onto for the rest of the series. Shows as disparate as Bamboo Blade, Black Lagoon and Lucky Star stand out as particularly interesting, but I've rarely downloaded something and failed to finish it.

Yes, I'm an immature 20 year-old.

Macross was a good movie (I liked the first series better though), but I wouldn't put it as the best of all time.

I mean, it has Minmei in it. Minmei! The girl whom you just want to strangle every single time she opens her mouth!

Depends upon what you mean by best. If you're talking art, I would give that to Mononoke no hime. If you're talking story, Sen to Chihiro, but if you're talking about what pulled my heart strings the most in both comedy and being touching... Urusei Yatsura 5: The Final Chapter. I love Totoro, but there is still something about Ataru's deceleration and Lum's realization.

While I can entirely agree with you on those choices, I need to admit that I have a lot of difficulty switching my mind over to "movie mode" while watching anime.

I have no problem analyzing film. Anime, though, I get too caught up in.

Do Miyazaki's movies count?Always. His latest film, Gake no Ue no Ponyo about a little goldfish-girl was wonderful.

That said, everybody had a good time making fun of the tie-in merchandise, like this thing that they sold at Lawson's. People started using Ponyo as a name for the Deep Ones. :D

I know women in their 60s who do anime cosplay. If it's good you don't outgrow it.

Except for Minmei, I like Macross - it had adult themes and reasonably mature writing - Hell, I even named a cat Miriya.

Considering anime basically covers all genres and is really a medium rather than a genre all to its own, I think we might find it rather difficult to rate a single best.

Studio Ghibli's works definitely rank up there though.

It's not like the sequel series didn't have some main cast character who's primary job was singing. In fact, Frontier had two.

I did compare a Macross movie to the American Robotech spinoff once. In a word, the American version sucked. Especially when it came to scene directing and animation quality.

Early episode combat choreography was top notch though, although it started to degrade later on. On the other hand, it was a bit of a surprise to find that large a departure from the classical protagonist character design.

Gah! I remember renting Macross back when I was a kid. A lot of really great anime has come out since then. Anything by Miyazaki is going to be good to say the least. Of course you also have Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, and (dare I say) Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust to consider.

Oh don't get me wrong. I LOVE Macross. Even though the animation is showing its age, the story is strong and most of the characters are compelling.

It's just Minmei herself that I want to hurt.

Between Minmei and Ranka though, I suspect you're hard pressed to choose between the two to hate more. :p

Interestingly enough, I was reading one of the entertainment magazines they sell here, and Alto apparently won the trap of the year award. No surprise there.

Mecha does nothing for me at all. I managed to wade through all the episodes of Evangelion. At least the ending was interesting. I won't bother with any others.

My favourite anime TV series:
Noir
Death Note

Favourite films:
Paprika

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
The Place Promised in our Early Days

I kid, I kid. Really, though, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann? What was original about that? Robots, drills, beasts, breasts and a post-apocalyptic world? Those are some of the staples of anime.

Hell, they make fun of robots with drills in some anime these days. ^^

Enjoyed Evangelion series, most of the Studio Ghibli stuff is pretty decent and Mononoke is a great watch - DN Angel was a strange cute series although the main character was translated as a 'burly pirate thief' in the official English DooVD. o_O
