No, I now have a puppet for that.
It was just a really fuckin good movie. It was awesome. I loved it. I think a lot of people on NSG would enjoy it too.
Go see Gran Torino if you haven't yet, too.
That, Taken and Underworld: Rise of the Lycan are all on the list

Fuck you;)
I saw Taken on Friday night, when it hits theaters next week you should go see that, I will.

I might see Taken, but I did just see Underworld and, without having watched 1 or 2, I thought it was pretty good, though the plot was fairly shallow considered on its own.
Gran Torino, though, was all the things that a good movie should be. I considered watching it again, just a day after seeing it the first time, but I figured I should save its novelty for future savoring. ;)
Thanks to this thread, I think I will. Seriously.

Glad to be of service. It really is excellent. Its nice, because the "heroes" have their nasty moments. Very flawed. The movie is not black and white (except the Nazis suck, of course), which I raelly enjoy. There are some rather disturbing actions committed on behalf of the movies heroes.

I'd not go out of my way to see Rise of the Lycans. I also saw that on friday night and it rates a 'meh' on a scale of 'oh my god I want my money back' to 'hmmm that was ok.'

Is it more like Underwold 1 or 2? Because if its like 1, its top priority. If its more like 2, Ill wait for it to be on video.
1 was more story driven.
2 was blood and titties. Which is awesome, but not top viewing priority.

It was its own entity, it obviously had no surprises, but the premise was Werewolves Rule, Vampires Drool... well Werewolves also drool but its because they are physically incapable of swallowing thier saliva thanks to the shape of their muzzles.

So, general thumbs up on Defiance, Gran Torino, and Taken? Excellent. Three movies I was thinking I wanted to see, just for the main actors. Me happy. :D
I'll probably wait for Underworld:Lycans to hit DVD. Everytime I see the trailers I can only think, 'My, that movie is very blue, isn't it?'

Because of your avatar, I heard Donald Sutherland's uber-irritating fake voice from that movie reading your post aloud in my head. "Kelly's Heroes" scarred me. :p

I don't need to be told to go see a Clint Eastwood movie. He's always on the list, by default. Defiance and Underworld are on the list too, but I might wait for Taken on DVD.
Tell you what, you want a good movie on DVD, go rent Appaloosa. Quite possibly the best Western since Unforgiven.

I saw Valkyrie. Damn, I hated that movie. It was so "This is how I speak, I will never speak differently throughout this movie. I will never laugh. I will never make a joke. What is humor?"-ish that I almost left halfway through the movie.

No.
I'm tired of the "Untold Story" trope. Not only that, but this one smacks of hackneyed lines in exactly the typical places, like "we're not going to take this anymore" as motivation to a montage of preparations for rebellion. I'll wait for video, if that.

I'll wait for the DVD on this movie. The last movie I actually saw in a theater was 'Black Hawk Down', so it should be obvious that I don't go very often.
I have noted the movie being out, though, and I'm vaguely familiar with the story. So I think it will be worth the rental.
'Gran Torino' is also on the list. Any movie with an old guy on the porch, aiming a shotgun at punk whippersnappers, and saying "Get off my lawn" has got to be good.

I have zero intention of ever directing my eyeballs towards anything even remotely connected to Valkyrie. Tom Cruise's Good Nazi dress-up fantasies are not my kind of porn.

Yeah, that is something I fear with regard to Defiance -- Hollywood dumbification. But I'll give it a chance if the script doesn't suck so horrendously that the actors don't even get a chance to act. But I do expect to be able to check off every item on the Hollywood Cliche Checklist, and that will be annoying.

It has a distinct lack of cliches, and as I said, the character are very flawed, and for what its worth, I saw it with a Russian Jew who lived right in the area where this took place, and he loved it and said it was relatively accurate.

Its very dark in the movie, it makes things a bit difficult to see and there is lots of flashing around during action sequences, I'm surprised nobody had a seizure it was ok, but I wasn't to thrilled about paying $10 for it.

Out of the Ghettos and into the Forests!
Defiance (O.U.P. 1993, reprinted 2009 with a foreword by Edward Zwick)
Reviewed by Collectivity
Written by Dr Nechama Tec
Professor Emerita of Sociology
University of Connecticut, Stamford, Connecticut
PhD, Columbia University
Defiance – if you haven’t read a copy of Nechama Tec’s story of Belorussian Jews fighting the Nazis and collaborators, get it and read it. If you haven’t seen the movie, “Defiance”, then wait a few weeks and it will be coming to a cinema near you.
Predictably, the release of the movie has spawned reviews that question the timing of it (given the events in Gaza). There is also at least one reviewer from the English Guardian who points out “the heads of all eight major studios, and so many producers and directors, happen to be Jewish” and who goes on to draw parallels with Hollywood’s treatment of Moslems. An interesting point perhaps but largely irrelevant to a film that focusses on a Jewish Partisan detachment that successfully fought back in WWII while keeping alive over a thousand men, women and children who had escaped the ghettos. That the film is a Hollywood treatment of an historical event and therefore a fictional narrative that is based on real events
The world knows little about the Bielski brothers – not even many Jews have heard of them. However, Nechama Tec’s history based on exhaustive interviews with surviving partisans will change all that. When people ask, “Why didn’t the Jews fight back in World War Two?” we can say, “Read Defiance”. Dr Nechama Tec chronicles how in 1941, Tuvia Bielski and his brothers Zus and Asael who, were farmers in the Polish/Belorussian village of Stankiewicze, organised a resistance movement whose priority was to save Jews and whose secondary aim was to fight back. This historical account describes how the Bielskis and some
Nechama Tec (maiden name Hela Bawnik) was a child in Poland when the Nazis invaded. Her immediate family went into hiding and survived the war. Her autobiography, Dry Tears, deals with her family’s struggle to remain alive by denying their identity. Perhaps that is why she became so fascinated by the Bielski Otriad who lived and fought as Jews at a time when to do so was nearly impossible. Dr Tec’s online biography details many of the themes in Defiance: her “research and publications have concentrated on the intricate relationships between self-preservation, compassion, altruism, rescue, resistance, cooperation, and gender. She is currently working on two books, Profiles of Women and A Comparative Study of Jewish and Non-Jewish Resistance. ”
Defiance is not Mila 18. Mila 18 by Leon Uris and Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Kenneally were both excellent novels but that’s what they were – novels. Both were well researched and largely based on real events but you will find them in the fiction part of the library. Defiance is definitely non-fiction. Dr Tec’s blend of historical and sociological research is detailed and the reader will come across passages that have been repeated, comments about how accounts differ and comparisons of differing power relationships within the forest community. While these can be a little dry at times and can interfere with the flow of the narrative, it gives the book its historical integrity. You’ll still be turning the pages till the end to find out what happened to everyone. And the news there is pretty good – the Bielski otriad (partisan detachment with the Russian army) had an attrition rate of only 5% (an estimated 49 out of 1,200) and remarkably, noone died of starvation despite living in forests for three years.

In the words of my Jewish friend
"I quite liked Defiance. I was SO PISSED they didn't teach us this shit at hebrew school. It was all "BAAW lots of us died" , never anything about people who fought back."
I thought it was pretty good too.
Taken was good, but I couldn't discuss it with anybody because I saw it before it was out.. >.<

That's how it was with most Partisans. Though in truth they mostly avoided the Nazis and simply played logistics to other partisan groups.
I really want to see the movie.
