honestly I really should try watching some of this is it any good? depends on what you want. all three has decent action (Appleseed was directed by John Woo) all three can provoke some deep philosophical discussions, and all three has great artwork (tho CGI for APPLESEED and Vexille.)

Appleseed and Vexille deal with what makes one human, Paparika goes into the differences in the Psyche concerning dreams and reality.

I actually do have boondocks sitting up in my room somewhere but I would prolly fall asleep after the first hour or so no matter what I watch :$ there are other series out there. Burn Notice, House, NCIS, Firefly, etc...

a Friend showed me one he got from Japan. AWSOME movie. dealing with a vet's struggle to fit back into civilian society and the PTS problems that interferre with his job, Girlfriend and life in general. VERY SERIOUS DRAMA!

Lars and the Real Doll, yes its about a man and a sex doll and equally bizarre yes its a family movie. And really worth watching.

I don't see how a recommendation of three, very good, Japanese-language animations (two of which with wide, critically acclaimed, releases in the West) equates to "a ridiculous obsession with Japanese culture".

Here are a few of my favorites (drama):

Akira Kurosawa's Ran (mournful war) or Yojimbo (cynical action).

Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (social commentary with the best cinematography ever) or Paths of Glory (full of military corruption and emotional spots).

Ridley Scott's The Duellists (excellent period costumes and the greatest sword-fighting ever captured on screen--period).

Oliver Stone's: Nixon (the only good Oliver Stone film).
