...or Gong Xi Fa Cai if you're speaking Mandarin, make sure you greet your Chinese friends this way.

It's Chinese New Year tonight, the Year of the Ox arrives.

The Ox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ox_(zodiac))

If you're born in '73, '85 or '97 [give or take a month] then you're an Ox, you'll need to protect yourself by, at least, wearing something red every day as well as jade. It's generally not a good year for you.

For all, no haircuts over the next few weeks and open your windows at midnight tonight to let the old ghosts out, feel free to make as much noise as possible to frighten them off, fireworks are good, exploding tacos are better.

What's your Chinese sign, do you have any of the attributes whatsoever?

...my calendar says it's on Monday. :(

I'm a boar, but I don't think most of it fits for me, except for the part about thriving in the "arts" I guess.

Yes but tonight [Sunday] is when the celebrations happen and there'll be fireworks over Hong Kong harbour, rather like New Year's Eve.

I'm bald, so I don't bother with haircuts. It's too damn cold to open the windows, and I don't believe in ghosts, anyways. Although any excuse to make things go 'BOOM' is always welcome. I think I've got some M-80's or some gunpowder around here somewhere.

Don't hide behind the respectable name 'boar', you're a piggy!

The Pig is the last sign of the zodiac, apparently there was a race across a river to determine the order of the zodiac, the powerful Ox was kicking ass but the cunning Rat was sitting on his head and jumped off onto the bank to win the race, hence Rat comes first, Ox second...Piggy is last.

Gong xi fa cai! Xin nien kuai le! (yes, I've been playing too much Emperor: Rise of the Middle Dragon...)

I was born in 1979 (Yin earth, year of the sheep); it doesn't seem to match me more than the alternatives. TO be honest, they sound like those fake psychics using cold reading (guesses that SOUND very accurate, but actually apply to many many people).

Xin nian...

Much like Western horoscope, the exact time you were born means different things so you don't have to be a typical Ram, you might be more a Dragon eh?

I don't believe in the mystical aspect but I suspect there's something to the time you were born. A simple example is that, because they're the eldest in their class, a higher percentage of athletes are those born around September *waits for first 'I was born in September and I'm not athletic* post..

When you're born can affect your life and I do wonder whether being born in Summer or Winter makes some difference, hard to say.

Funny, 'cause some of the youngest in my class were born in September. The eldest in my class were born in December. I guess the cut-off date makes the real difference.

That sounds reasonable, it's called the Relative Age Effect, it seems more 'the first half of the year' so December eldest sounds right.

...I was born in october and I'm nonathletic...

Then again, I was among the yougnest in my class (IIRC the cutoff is the end of the year or something). I was still damned good at fencing and badminton, though!

I´m an Ox myself,
and of course a Pisces.

Many of the traits (of both signs) do indeed match me pretty well while some do not.
But I do not believe in such things anyway.

I am here to the rescue!

http://chinese.astrology.com/

This will tell you your Chinese Zodiac and Element.

My Element is Wood and my Sign is Rat.

Like the rings of a tree circle out and expand through the years, so too do those born under the Chinese Astrology Element of Wood. You Wood personalities seek chances for growth and for renewal in all you do, 'branching out' (excuse the pun!) whenever possible.

When they mention expanding, if they are talking about my waist line than they are spot on...

Your open, expansive mind makes you a compassionate and generous friend, colleague and ally. You understand the inherent value of what you and those around you possess, and your confidence allows you to act upon your beliefs.

I guess I do exhibit these kind of traits, I'm often accused of being a compassionate person by others and I can have confident streaks from time to time.

While your strength forms the backbone of any social group or partnership you're a part of, you could have a tendency to be a bit too systematic in your thinking, and sometimes your passivity allows others to overwhelm and inhibit you. Don't let yourself be lost in a vast forest, an anonymous tree among millions of others.

I think on the fly, nothing too systematic about that; I have almost no control over my own congnitive process a lot of the time.

Make your mark on the world -- you're especially adept at business ventures.

Thats a downright lie... I suck at business ventures.

Though the Western rat is reviled as little more than a bottom-dwelling disease carrier, this animal is viewed much differently in the East. The Eastern rat is revered for its quick wits and its ability to accrue and hold on to items of value; rats are considered a symbol of good luck and wealth in both China and Japan. Clever and quick-witted, the Rat of the Chinese Zodiac is utterly disarming to boot. Possessed of excellent taste, this Sign flaunts its style at every turn. Its natural charm and sharp, funny demeanor make it an appealing friend for almost anyone. The Rat likes to know who is on its side and will treat its most loyal friends with an extra measure of protection and generosity.

Guilty as charged.

Behind that sweet smile, though, Rats are keen and unapologetic promoters of their own agendas. This Sign is motivated by its own interests, which often include money; greed can become a problem if the Rat isn't careful to keep its priorities straight. This Sign's natural powers of charm and persuasion can definitely come in handy! Although they are often hoarders, Rats can be very generous to those in their pack, namely friends and family members who have proven their loyalty. Others might perceive them as quick-tempered and sharp-tongued, but never boorish. Verbal jousting is a great pleasure for the Rat, a Sign that everyone around will quickly learn either to love or to hate.

I am nothing like the first part of this section states, I couldn't really care much less about material things beyond basic comforts and a few toys here and there for amusement.
The rest seems a lot like me however; especially the hoarder part, I have a hard time deciding what to keep and what to get rid of.

Rats enjoy being on the outside looking in, as the outside affords a view into the inner workings of a system or situation. The Rat's keen mind always seeks out new knowledge, to be stored away for future use. This ever-curious Sign also welcomes challenges as a way to stay sharp. If boredom sets in the Rat is no fun at all, but that isn't likely; this Sign knows how to keep itself entertained.

I like to be involved, I'm not much for hovering around the edges unless I am uncertain about what to do next. As for boredom, I always have a way to entertain myself... entertaining others.

Don't know if you guys already know this, but according to ChineseZodiac.com (http://www.chinesezodiac.com/chinesezodiacchart.php), the zodiac animal of your birth year is only one of three which make up your horoscope.

Along with birth year animals, the Chinese Zodiac also represents inner animals and secret animals. We’re probably all aware of the 12 animals or signs depicted on the Chinese Zodiac. Based on our year of birth, we understand that we’re born under the sign of the Dog, or the Ox, or one of the 10 other signs. But the truth is it’s the inner animals and the secret animals that actually tell the most about who we really are and what our futures hold.

The 12 animals or signs of the Chinese Zodiac are associated with a person’s birth year, and the animals repeat every 12 years. The inner animals and the secret animals are associated with a person’s birth month (of which there are 12) and a person’s hour of birth (of which there are also 12 as they are calculated as 2-hour increments), respectively. When combined, the 12 animals, the 5 elements, the 12 birth months and 12 birth 2-hour segments create 8,640 different personality combinations!

To make this easier to understand, the animal representing your birth year determines the “outer” you. The animal representing your birth month determines your “inner” you; the person you wish you could be. And the animal representing your time of birth determines your “secret” you; the person you are but that you prevent the rest of the world from knowing about.

You can go to ArielSpeaks (http://www.arielspeaks.com/Astrology/Free_Chinese_Astrology.html) to look up the animals of your birth month and hour.

So my "outer" animal is the Pig, my "inner" animal is the rabbit, and my "secret" animal is the rooster. Kind of gives a more complete picture.
