So, the video in this post actually gives me an idea. Obama calls for us to get together, to not only help ourselves, but to help others.

How do you plan to help others?

I may actually start doing some volunteer work, God knows I have all this free time that I don't need to be spending on NSG and porn. \

Your turn!

I gave up my time as a tutor last year. Does that count? >.>

I don't have time this year. Too busy being a heavily loaded college student.

About 3 months ago I started to volunteer my Sunday afternoons at an OAP home, visiting those who have no family left to visit them.

I actually found that a fair few of them were both interested in what I was doing and, even more, had some great advice.

I asked a few, there's about 5, whether they'd like to form a committee to use their experience to come up with thoughts and solutions, I pay a monthly stipend from the company, only $100 to each for their time.

They don't really care about the money, they do take pride in being useful once more and they really do come up with some great advice and help.

I sometimes think that I'm technically using a form of slave labour but, as far as I can tell, it's winners all around and the nurses have told me how much more active they all are.

It's 5 hours of my time that I'd usually spend slumped on a sofa.

Well, apparently the Obama's have a very unique way of getting together: Public fisting.

How does one spay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutering#Females_.28spaying.29) a gas?

I teach. I donate money and goods to various charities. I've donated time and money to churches. I've helped publicize and helped out in various drives at school (canned goods, clothing, books, blood, collections for disaster victims, collections for ill children in the community, collections for St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Make A Wish...)

I probably could do more this summer.

I do the "fist bump" thing with my students -- it's about as sexual or terroristic as a handshake.

I heard Obama might institute a sort of student grant system where you get $4000 off your tuition if you do 100 hours of community service in that year.

As long as it's voluntary, terrific.

I know that many high schools now require 20 hours community service to graduate. Adding onto that should not be onerous.

What's wrong with that? 20 hours over four years? Five hours a year of thinking about and acting on behalf of someone other than yourself? Some parts of education demand practice. You don't get better at anything without doing it more than once.

I wasn't saying 20 hrs was excessive or wrong -- I was saying that $4k off your tuition in exchange for 100 hrs community service in one year was a good idea, as long as it's voluntary.

And generally, kids do their 20hrs for graduation in one year -- which I still don't think is onerous. What, an hour a weekday for a month? Easy.

My oversight, I apologize.

I can't imagine why (or how) a tuition waiver for community service would be anything BUT voluntary.

I think it is great as long as they have a wide choice of what kind of voluntary work they're gonna do. That way they can stimulate a sense of community among their students. Just like sports classes are also abloigatory in most schools (or at least here they are), even though it is something most people preferably do in their free time.
of course you could always discuss the importance these classes should for your graduation. (Just like they usually won't fail you completely if you slightyly fail one subject at school)

How do you plan to help others?

I'm trying to start a community garden in my neighbourhood...most likely for the spring of 2010, if we can find a suitable piece of land. I hope to get into a project with the Halifax Initiative (http://www.halifaxinitiative.org/) shortly, and will probably manage the volunteer program at the Main Street Farmer's Market again this summer. I keep busy.

I don't need to do anything to help other people, if necessary i'll make them realise self-actualisation to assist themselves.

Haha, spay:D

As to OP
Shockingly enough I use to volunteer for the Salvation Army, but that was a while ago. I really need to get involved with gay community here in Tacoma as well as the PNW. Or, you know, that spay idea.

I put in probably about 120 hours of work for charities during the summer fall and winter last year through my job at the radio station. I plan on doing as much as possible this year as well (if I don't leave my job).
