Clowns

Since there is at least one clown on NSG, I suppose it is not unreasonable to ask this one question:
What drives a person to become a clown?
I'm asking because of a personal curiosity.

I believe it was Katganistan who said it best. "Some are born clowns. Some achieve clownness. And some have clownness thrust upon them."

Not all people are driven to become one; it simply happens to them.

It's a curse, much like vampirism. Those slain by clowns are doomed to rise as one themselves on the next full moon. *nod*

To try to redeem myself from having to delete a post:

I knew a guy back in high school who made pretty good money as a clown. Many restaurants have a parents' night, or whatever you call it, when kids' dinners are half price or free. He did one of those on Tuesday and another on Thursday and was set.

I think it is because clowns get reactions. Some people love clowns and some people hate them, but nobody says, "Oh. A clown." You can't just put them in the background the same way you can ignore a lawyer or engineer or waiter.

Heh, that's a good way of looking at it.

What drives a person to become a clown?

Utter depravity is what drives people to become clowns. Whether this is innate or acquired through nurture is up for debate.

Fear of clowns is fairly common. They're the smart ones. *nods*

Clowns are kind of sinister. They're worse than mimes, but not as bad as midgets.

I can tell you why I don't like clowns. As a kid they were all up in my face, yelling and screaming... Damn clowns were all up in my personal space man!

Stupid clowns...

Clowning is an art. It's like asking someone what drives them to be a painter or an actor or a sculptor.

That being said, you can't just put on some make-up and act like an idiot, if you don't know what you're doing you'll just be annoying and people will want to beat the crap out of you (and rightly so).

Whereas if you clown properly, they will either love you and not want to beat you up, or fear you too much to try. :)

First, you accidentally buy a pair of shoes one size too large. You find them comfortable, so you buy shoes two sizes too large, then three sizes, then four, and before you know it, you have giant red shoes, plaster on makeup, don silly wigs, and carry around a tiny horn you honk every damned second while you and some friends stuff yourselves into a car meant for only two. THAT is how you become a clown.

That would be true if I had written it as I.T., and not IT. There is a difference. Somewhat... kinda...

Well that would explain why the clowns that violated my personal space scared me. They sucked.

On a personal note, I am now carrying a crossbow for anyone who violates my personal space.

Feel sorry for those who meet me on elevators. *nod*

Also, teenagers, please quit coming up to me and telling me how you're afraid of me....logic tells me if you were really afraid of me you wouldn't come to tell me anything.

I'll stay away from you if you stay away from me.

I don't approach anyone, so if you don't want a clown to talk to you, steer clear, most of the time that's all you have to do to avoid us.

I read a short story along these lines by John Connolley. Clowns kidnap children and transform them into clowns. Much like Nicholson's joker, the clown face is real, the people face is fake.

Though in your case, the clown face is real, the mud coating is.....just mud.

To make people happy for even a short time is a gift, i'm not talking about humour i mean a real and secure sense of happiness, clownishing isn't a bad start to understanding this strange concept.

Now i'm sure some of you know reasons for people being scared of clowns is the mask, if people wear masks in a group they are more willing to try risky behaviour, and sometimes the risky behaviour is dangerous to other people, hence the warpaint used by old tribes, or helmets with visors it dehumanises the person.
