Thank you. This issue was right at the top of the agenda, and really needed its own thread so that we could give it the full detailed treatment that it merits.

our new president's name needed its own thread? glad i did you people some good. i was just being silly when i called him BO and wanted to make sure it was put in perspective. people in other places talked about "BO in the white house" or called him by all his initials. the latter i think made me think of BO. just took out the H from BHO

BO or BHO. In either case, what's the problem? It's just his initials.

I was a bit confused at first seeing the title of this thread, I wouldn't use Obama's initials in that way, I don't know about other countries, but in the US, the term "BO" means "body odor", lol. Using his intials that way could cause confusion

I think BO is much better than Hussein, which is a bit... lacking when it comes to ease of identification, and also not a middle name he, his friends, family or aquaintances actually use. I suspect the people believing that he's "secretly muslim" will continue using it though.

That said, what's wrong with Obama? Is it such a long, complicated name that's difficult to type out? Is it a name that's easy to confuse with others? Especially on the American political scene? So what's the point?

Expressing contempt and disrespect for the new president is a point to make, I guess...

gravlen the first time i saw someone call him hussein was an online comment "elect hussein as comander in chief and change is what you'll get" i did not know obama's middle name yet and was confused. my dad once called obama a closet muslim but i don't think my parents knew his middle name yet then. now dad does not believe that. my mom thought he was muslim once but upon finding out his dad left when he was two gave up that thought. i was contemptuous of him once because of his change talk. it seemed radical, leftist to me.

Then why don't you feel that you can attack his politics? Why do you feel that you must attack the man, and show us how much you disrespect him because you disagree with him?

I respect most of the people I disagree with politically. Even the former president, whom I harbor no love for, and honestly don't have any respect for, I've tried to stay respectful about when discussing him and his policies with others, like on this forum. While I've been amused by some calling him "shrub" and not cared while others have called him Dubya, I've tried never to give in to the temptation of obfuscating my disagreement with his politics by attacking/disrespecting the person publically.

I would urge you to do the same. Attack the policies you don't agree with, lambast his chioces when he does something that you think is stupid - but be aware that if you treat him disrespectfully, people may choose to simply not listen to what you have to say, writing you off as a "hater" (See: "Those darn Bush-bashers will complain about everything related to Bush, so they can safely be ignored").

My suggestion, again, is: Don't make it easy to be written off. Don't remove yourself from the debate that way.

As for the "radical" changes Obama proposes: They really aren't that radical. Nothing he's done or said yet is dramatically left-wing, in the global scale of things. And why you would feel the need to be disrespectful simply because his policies are left leaning will remain a mystery to me. Let him earn your disrespect, in the same manner that he'll need to earn the respect of the electorate. Start in neutral, and take it from there.

That'll be $1.99, please (taxes included).
