Seven wonders of the internet

What are the seven wonders of the internet?

I am going to propose some obvious ones

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)

and

Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page)

and

Internet Sacred Text Archive (http://www.sacred-texts.com/)

Essentially web resources that are so good that it would be difficult to imagine life without them.

What are yours?

For me, personally, www.leo.org would definitely be one. Best language dictionary ever.

Google seems to be a rather obvious candidate as well.

Ebay, Amazon, Myspace, Facebook. All have revolutionised use of the internet amongst a lot of people. Perhaps they are not the first in each genre, but have been the most influential.

Related to your Gutenburg and Sacred texts sites: IMSPL (http://www.imspl.org) for music.

Well, you know, I chat on MSN, I send email, I text people and sometimes I even make phonecalls.... I like my diversity. And then there's always swingers' pages.

Besides, nobody I know is on facebook anyway. *shrugs*

Ok, I kid, I kid. More accurately that would be the seedy underbelly of the internet from which memes emerge.

I think they have a case, they've caused some worldwide phenomena, though that's more a function of the internet rather than a feature, which would be message boards in general.

So...

Message Boards/Blogs
Email - it's changed the way business communicates, probably not for the better
Google - Christmas family debates weren't half as fun with Google on the i-Phone, "really, let me check that fact actually...", changed a lot
Classmates was actually the first Facebook type thing, basically a free, connected personal web page for non-programmers
Windows '95, can't deny that this pushed the Internet over the tipping point
Ammm... LEEEEROOOY JENNNKINS!
Not confident about this one but XML, where form became content and vice versa

Well, what do you have in mind, Sdae-kun?

I would say that Everquest/WoW drastically altered the way people play video games. AIM drastically altered the way people communicate. Both helped forge a pseudo-language of sorts. Napster ushered in the era of p2p and complete redefined the business model for the music industry, paving the way for the rampant success of iTunes. They're not websites, but they are applications that are dependent on the Internet and they have helped define it.

There are EXACTLY seven wonders, strange as it is - the Big Five and the two Unmentionables. But if I told you the links, I'd be banned.

My second favorite one, though, named M--tspin, is amazing in that it's simultaneously an excellent visual explanation of how car engines work, a quick test of sexual orientation, and just an interesting discovery to make.

Regarding JStor, I omitted it for the reason that, though it provides a corpus of academic journals, this is of interest only to academics, or undergraduates. Wikipedia does not possess such a limited appeal, whilst, moreover, wikipedia provides a bredth and depth of information the average internet user does not possess independantly, whereas the journals JStor provides are often replicas of those held by academic institutions anyway.

In an academic context, JStor has undoubtedly altered undergraduate, and postgraduate, study, profoundly, however, its demographic is simply too limited, and it acts as an adunct to extant academic libraries, as opposed to wikipedia.

Wiki is also not peer reviewed and prone to being hijacked or incorrect.

I would disagree with the use of "prone" in that sentence. I'm not going to rehash the same old story of Wikipedia having as many inaccuracies as Encyclopedia Britannica. I also disagree it is bent towards being hijacked, however it does have a greater risk because of the easy editing.

Wikipedia is really information for the masses that can't be screwed with, or just can't understand actual scientific research.

yes wiki is prone to be hijacked. I normally get bored and hijack between 10 and 20 articles a week. the goal is to see how long it last before it gets fixed. the trick is to make it look correct and look sourced.

The masses should not be allowed to own a computer much less access the internet.

"Just checking your defenses" doesn't work for hackers, and I'm sure it won't work for you. I think there needs to be checks in place for ips doing this, and bans. Of course there are way's around this, but this would get rid of 90% of people that are being assholes.

And its not illegal to edit an article that allows editing. it would be like me editing a copy of Linux so it doesn't work and making the bad copy available for download.

they never will never block access. Wiki is run by free source/access hippies. the most they ever do is temporarily lock an article from being edited and half the time when they do that its the bogus copy they leave locked up.

Also an encyclopedia is not a peer reviewed, so that argument does not phase me in the slightest anyone who quotes an encyclopedia, is asking to be corrected.

But my point still remains that it is access to large amounts of usually factual information for the common person. Anything that does this is given a thumbs up from me. I wish more people weren't ignorant retards, and Wikipedia goes some of the way to solving this.

I dont care about the masses.
as far as I am concerned we should have a return to serfdom, for those who do not finish college, and simply require the lords have a college degree.
replace the manner with a factory of some kind.
solves the problem of dealing with the stupid masses and creates cheap labor for industrial expansion.

College or University isn't a benchmark for intelligence.

I certainly don't see myself going to college or university in the near future, being in the final year of high school this year. Does this mean I should be a serf?

I blame a widely circulated email that alleged that if enough people put "Jedi Knight" on their census forms then the government would have to acknowledge it as a real religion, and then you'd really be a Jedi Knight.
