Scatman Crothers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBYAis7akKw), legendary singer and voice of the Transformer Jazz, or this goofy bastard? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpHLEm9-0bg)

Yup. He was good.
I do wonder if this thread is going to go anywhere though. Aside for amusing deliberate misunderstanding of the meaning of 'scat' in this context. But there's only so far you can go with that.

I'd go with the goofy guy a.k.a The Heir to the Throne of Scatting.

Scatman :D One of my musical heroes of the 90s :D
That said, I'd really love an internet scatroom, where everybody is talking in scats...

I would think that it takes more than not writing lyrics to half of your techno-y dance music to earn the 'Throne of Scatting'...especially since it's supposed to be a way for vocalists to improvise, not 'skittledobebop' through hooks.

It'd be so cool if I had actually found a video of her doing Cottontail right about now...

I have actually written the chorus and a verse to a song called "Scat Attack" about that particular subject.
Would tie in nicely with the fav. lyrics thread.

Supposedly the scatting was a way for him to be in music while working around his stuttering problem, so kudos to him.
There's some skill right there, I'd never be able to move my mouth and make sounds that fast.

Best vocal improvisors alive or to have ever lived:
Ella Fitzgerald
Mel Tormé
Jon Hendricks
Dave Lambert
Annie Ross
Louis Armstrong
Sarah Vaughan
Joe Williams
King Pleasure
Bob Stoloff
Daryl Bosteels
Janis Siegel
Tim Hauser
Alan Paul
Cheryl Bentyne
Kristin Korb
Darmon Meader
...off the top of my head.
Sadly, it's a dying idiom. As a lifelong student of improvisation, we all learned from the great instrumentalists. Those who don't are those who improvise poorly, and they are the ones responsible for the slow demise of the only thing vocally at which I'm really very good. :(
