One senator. Ted Kennedy.

so we've gone from "two senators collapse at lunch, it could be poison!" to "man with brain cancer collapses".

Shame for old Ted, and if he must step down I hope my state can move someone good into his seat (and, frankly, it is a tad bit embarassing for a former presidential candidate to be still a JUNIOR senator, but eh). He's an institution around these parts.

Hmm, of course NOW CNN just said "yeah it was Kennedy but someone said Byrd may have had some issues, too". Who knows. (Earlier it had been either or, they didn't know yet).

One senator. Ted Kennedy.
I think you could mistake him for two... I've said it before, he needs to retire and enjoy the last few years on his boat.

Yeah I was watching One News here which was just piggybacking off the ABC broadcast, and it said both collapsed. Couldn't find an article.

Oh, well if Byrd is having issues too, that's probably just the shock of seeing a black president...

Why does everything always have to be linked?! It's happening RIGHT NOW, turn on the TV or go to CNN.com or some such site. Sheesh.

Silly Byrd apparently ending up making my first post a lie. Hrmph.

CNN says now that apparently Byrd had acute health trouble first and when medical personnel had already arrived for him Kennedy collapsed into a lengthy seizure.

Then again, if Byrd had also had issues Obama wouldn't have mentioned only Kennedy in his remarks there.

I'm being a tad unfair. Byrd now is a fairly progressive guy, and an Obama supporter. His past however has been less...open, including a filibuster of the Civil Rights Act, and membership in the KKK.

In fairness to the man, he has come out and publically apologized for such, saying he now regrets it, and realizes that it was the wrong thing to do.

Yes, people learn from their mistakes, and change over time. I'm more concerned with the man as he is now, than the man as he was fourty years ago.

In any case, my thoughts and prayers are with both him and Kenedy. Let's hope they're ok.

Also, what has Obama said about it (if anything)?

This is very sad for Senators Kennedy and Byrd, but at least I'm glad they were around to see this day. I was wondering, especially, if Kennedy would make it this long.

He added a bit at the beginning of his short remarks after dinner. Basically just saying that his thoughts were with Ted Kennedy and his family.

For all that it seems odd, it's not that shocking, seeing as the title of this thread could be rewritten: "Two elderly men in poor health collapse during exciting, crowded event."

Here's hoping they both turn out to be all right.

Hunting through news stories also suggests that Byrd didn't even "collapse" per se, but just wasn't feeling well.
