I dunno, it's a lot more interesting musically than "God Save the Queen" (or My Country is of Thee as most Americans will know it... that always throws me when I hear it). On the other hand La Marseilles is awesome :D

On the other hand, despite my innate British cynicism, it's nice to see the US, and indeed as a result the world, being so positive and optimistic about the future. I just hope the come down isn't too hard. Remember, even if Obama doesn't manage all he's promised, steps in the right direction is still great and an improvement over what has gone before.

It was in Hong Kong on the subway that an Englishman got ashamed of the words to his version of that song, when I pointed them out.

I think we are like 95-97 %. I wouldn't mind voting for someone like that either, although it would be a bit strange.

On to the case: Why does Americans feel the need to wave the flag, sing their national anthem and show their "patriotism" all the time, everywhere? To an outsider it looks like you have minority complexes, and it looks rather ridiculous. Everything has to be so grand. Less is more you know.

last year when the earthquake hit, I was up real late one night, and they showed the flag-raising in Beijing or zhongnanhai or somewhere, and it was moving.

They played march of the volunteers.

I played march of the volunteers when I shot a home made potato bazooka thingy for the first time in high school. I'm a thoroughly reformed adolescent quasi-commie, I'll have you know.

And, i've had a bit to drink, and it's one of the best days of my life.

Elect someone like Obama, you'll never have to be ashamed again.

I know I won't be, after a young adulthood spent traveling the world in shame.

We were playing truth or dare, and while displaced Anhuiren can drink vast volumes, they're not so creative in their dares.

They dared us to sing, and we, being drunk americans who were not raised on KTV, agreed upon "my country tis of thee."

They responded with an uproarious march of the volunteers.

It was like Casablanca, except we were the Germans!

Later on I dared my meiguoren pengyou to go down on a bottle of Zhujiang Pijiu, and she did it like a champ.

The chinese were tickled pink.

This particular englishman wasn't terribly fond of the idea of a Queen. Gracious, Long Lived, Noble, Etc.

No, it's about 90% including the whole of the UK, if you minus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which are basically all white, you get like 85%.
