So, I got a job offer today as an Administrative Assistant, basically a secretary. I do all of the Administrative work while they go play golf or whatever. Anyways, while I'll probably take the job I am wondering if this job could lead to promotions down the line, or is it a dead end job?

How big is the company? How much resentment do you already have for your boss? Where do you want it to lead? Why did you apply?

that's impossible to say. Administrative teams have their own managers, certainly, especially in large firms, and it's possible to move up that hierarchy, but it's difficult to move from the administrative area into another field, within the same company, unless there are positions in the organization that the admin fits. My former AA for example was one of the best admins I've ever known. But no matter how hard he worked, no matter how great an admin he was, he will never, ever, be moved from "admin" to "lawyer" as a result of his exemplary administrative skills.

Who cares? It's a job you haven't stated you will hate, so I presume you won't hate it. Take it.

I only wish you had told me that before I sucked your dick.

In the current economy, you're darn lucky to be getting any job, so it sounds a bit silly to complain about how this job would require you to work.

The best career advice I can give is not to ask NSG for career advice.

Generally, the highest you'll go, after many years, is Office Mgr. Not really for someone who has advancement on their mind.

I'd be fine with a dead-end job, so long as the work isn't manual labour, and the pay is decent (I'd be find with minimum wage, which is 12$ NZD here).

do it

had a friend who did an admin apprenticeship work for the British LSC...she has qualifications up the arse, has been to Jamaica at 18 (is now using the money she has to travel oz for a year), spends her days smoking and has the worlds second largest collection of blue-tac animals\tequila

to show how much of a bitch she is: after the LSC moved the government offered to pay to move her with it to Leicester which was turned down because shes silly like that...she got a job the next day in admin and has been told she can come back to the work and start again any time she feels (and what with being a former government employee she can get a job in that easy as well)

Look at it as foot in the door. You are taking steps in the right direction. It will allows you to develop contacts that will allow you to make other moves. Take every course they will allow you to take. Be a sponge absorb everything you can learn about this place. You will meet malcontents everywhere you go try to put their comments in perspective.

Keep looking for whatever it is that you truly want to do. Keep your head up.

If that all fails admin assistant usually get a lot of opportunities for blackmail. Maybe now you can get a corporate sponsor. j/k

^this^

however, by entering the company, you can move sideways into other departments, but you gotta keep your knowledge base current.

Take the job. It's a sad fact that people who are already employed have an easier time finding jobs than the unemployed. If you don't like it, you can use it as a jumping off point for something better.
