Now this was the real good old days. I remember playing this in I think 84-85? Anyway its a classic. BTW played it on a old Epson laptop that was probably the thickest laptop I had ever seen.

Classic? Pfft. Zork sucked. But I know making it into an MMO will make it worse.

You were playing it in the 80's? That was top line back then. It inspired the Legend of Zelda.

Nah, it was my third Text adventure, and seventh computer game I played. 1998. It sucked.

I never really got into Zork. Adventure had it beat for general cave crawling, while some of the Phoenix games are much more interesting (and tricky). And then there's Galatea - while released much later, it has one of the most believable AIs in any game ever released.

Ooh, neat. I like the idea of a Zork MMO. I'm old enough to remember playing it when it was still pretty new and high-tech (although I was young enough that I had no idea it was new or high-tech), and I whiled away several happy afternoons with it and the Hitchhikers text-based game. :)

I think it may actually have been more fun for my parents and older brother to watch my reactions to the game than for me to play it. I was young enough I hadn't read the books yet, and so I kept expecting things to, y'know, make sense. :p

You probably just didn't realize that you're supposed to move the rug in order to enter the dungeon. The first time I tried to play it, I couldn't figure out how to get anywhere until someone told me that there was a trapdoor.

Not a patch on what the phoenix guys would do. In Fyleet you can die in four different and interesting ways within two moves of the start.

Haha. Which variant?

My family collectively cracked the 660 point flavour a couple years ago.
Rejistania
18-01-2009, 17:20
The traditional 351 point variant. Because it's in the repositories of most distroj.

660 is a great idea though.... where can I get that from ;)

Have a gander here (http://www.rickadams.org/adventure/e_downloads.html), and pick your preferred flavour - we went for Adventure 4. Compile and run. The first chunk of the cave will be easy and well known to you, but it then extends in many devious ways.

Oh, you'll probably want to knock up a little script to let you resume play instantly, instead of waiting.

No idea - I haven't compiled it in a couple of years. I wouldn't be surprised if it's somewhat outdated and thus complained about.

Does it work?
