Is Temperament Genetic?

I remember awhile back about reading that Siamese cats were once used as temple guards back when the country Siam was in existence. Of course Wiki says they were sacred temple cats, but I've heard they guarded temples too. This lead me to think about the Siamese I've had throughout my life. Sara was of course very protective of me, especially when I was sick. She even hissed at my mom at one point while I was sick. She also followed me everywhere in the house. Then there's Amelia, while she is more skittish, she still keep a look out while I sleep, and then when I'm awake she goes to sleep.

So I gotta ask, even though Siamese cats aren't used as Temple Guards anymore, can they still act as guard cats with no prior training? Is it something that's passed down through genetics? Or is it just that their instinct to take care of their pride and territory better developed than other cats?

i wouldnt count on cats to guard anything.

maybe they used to guard the temples against balls of yarn or women carrying baskets of laundry.

It's at least partially genetic -- see tourettes for details

Also thailand = siam.

I dunno Sara was very territorial. Back when we were trying to breed her, we brought home one male cat, and Sara would not let him out of his cage. She sat in front of that cage, with a low growl all night. She would not let that poor cat make one move.

oh my cat makes horrible scary noises when she sees another cat.

but that doesnt mean she would guard our house against anything but interloper cats.

True. Maybe they were just Scared Temple Cats and somehow Guards got thrown in there over time.

Yeah. The only thing cats could guard is President-Leaver Bush's shoes.
