Songs with a conscience

Many of us can remember where we were when we heard the news that the Angel of L.A. - Paris Hilton - was arrested for a minor driving transgression. Following the wave of recriminations over LAPDs racial profiling in their repeated arrests of rich, white females, we watched in horror as this delicate flower was treated like a common criminal, thrown into prison with no access to the necessities of life.

Oh tragic day.

Paris Hilton has poured her feelings on the matter into her new track - Jailhouse Baby - which you can view here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZRP3YXLteM

My question is, should more famous people use their position to highlight injustice or other causes close to our hearts?

Do they have a social responsibility to suffer on our behalf in order to translate that pain into the poetry as linked above?

What thinks NSG?

I sympathise, the emotion is almost overwhelming...

All those lonely nights of terror/ I thank you for your letters/ Words from around the world/ for the lonely little jail bird/ Still haunted by nightmares/ why's the system so unfair?/ But I'm stronger than before/ No I'm no longer scared

Wordsworth would hand in his poetry pen on reading this.

If the man who invented Auto-tune is still alive, I want someone to tear off his testicles and feed them to wild boars. Please?

I don't know, I just don't know, perhaps we should petition some radio stations, I just don't know how good she is at marketing herself.

I think she feels talent is its own reward but that's a shame because she really should promote herself.

She just needed some time to be alone with her thought.

I see what you did there.

Now I love me some trashy pop...Britney Spears, the various Simpsons, Kelly Clarkson, rihanna...but this is bad, even by those standards. Hell, even Pink is better than this.

The power and influence of this is so awe-inspiring that I think we should all be more pro-active about it.

I propose elections in which we choose celebrities to suffer, on our behalf, misfortunes that will then rocket them to super-stardom on the strength of their recorded agonies while teaching us all a much-needed lesson.

Who will be the first to pen You Shouldn't Try To Jump a Barbed-Wire Fence? Or the heartbreaking Zoo Animals Stole My Chihuahua? Then there's Don't Take a Camera to Bed, and I Punched Paparazzi (and I'm So Sad I Did).

We are on the verge of massive world-wide moral uplift.

It's a nice idea, not sure anyone will reach the artistic heights of Ms. Hilton but it's worth trying.

Mel Gibson - Jews didn't just kill Jesus, they killed my career as well

I think that would be an illuminating song.

I only listened two seconds. I just couldn't take the torture. That was just awful. How can something be that awful? I'm scared. I wish Anpu was here and if he wasn't real, I wish he was. Those two seconds of listening to that song were the worst years of my life.

*shudders and twitches uncontrollably.* I held out longer than some, I got to the point where she sang (that is the right word, isn't it?) a line about "they're wasting time on me," agreed and bailed out. I have to go now and huddle in a corner with Bailey's laced coffee while I recover.

It really gets going at about 1:10 in, it segues into whatever one calls that little break in any 4-bar song to indicate the writer has ambition beyond a basic tune with a Casio drumbeat.

There's notes that follow each other in some sort of orderly sequence and yet one finds it difficult to describe it with a word so mundane as 'music'.

...and somehow, the lyrics don't detract from the music, they manage to enhance the overall effect - amazing stuff.
