My boss is quite an online poker fan (thank the FSM, he doesn't play with real money). I've taken a peep and I'm somewhat interested. Anyone else plays online poker? What variant?

So, just to add a useless poll, poll coming.

I haven't played but I'm rather upset with my parents for wasting money on education and not plonking me down in front of a computer with an internet connection from a very young age.

While hanging around at a friends, I randomly picked up a Poker magazine and it was very interesting, apparently the circuit has been dominated by online poker players coming into offline competitions, some 17 year old Icelandic girl has won millions.

They're very aggressive, partly because they're used to constant clicking online, where the game is played far quicker than round a table.

One of them pointed out that since he's been playing online since 11, he's played millions and millions of hands whereas even the best offline pro has only played, at most, 100, 000 hands.

Another issue was cheating, where people play to a certain level and then get someone better to finish off the hand, there's all sorts of controversy over it.

I have a friend who gave up his banking job and now lives on a houseboat, his only income being online poker.

There's a trick whereby you come into a new table and lay down a high bet straightaway, most people will fold to see how you play but you leave straight away and go to another table and do the same, it has some name, you could never do it offline but there's so many tables online, so many amateurs fiddling about with $10 here and there that you can make a tidy sum per day.

Anyway, the whole magazine was a fascinating snapshot of a world I didn't know much about.

Not poker but I do play a lot of on-line backgammon. Never found poker as interesting as backgammon.

I played poker maybe twice in my life or so. I find it a bit silly as a game, actually, too little strategy and too much chance involved. Also, I don't like gambling.

i love online poker. for such a simple game there really is quite a learning curve to getting good at it.

the problem with playing for real money, especially for large amounts, is that you cant tell who is playing in collusion. (and of course there is the occasional bad actor from within the company who has hacked the program. those take a while to be caught)

so i prefer to play for free or for rather small amounts.

there are sites where you can get a good game for free (some have real life prizes that you can win), sites where you can play penny poker, sites where you pay a monthly fee to buy your way into every game on the site.

i mostly play on the last kind because its legal in the US so i can be assured of getting my money out (as long as it doesnt go belly-up before i do. my sister is still hoping to get a $600 check from one of those sites)

I never gamble with real money, but I'm fairly good at poker. My family plays poker on occasion, and it usually comes down to my dad and I.

Screw Texas Hold 'em. I'm sick of it. But there's all of, I dunno, two people on the other tables.

...in free play, anyhow.

Heh. In the short run, perhaps, but poker is not about the short run.
