Famous Photographs

I ran across this (http://wtam.com/cc-common/gallery/display.html?album_id=66759) while checking the local news. It's a gallery of 50 famous photographs.

Take a gander. Are there any that you haven't seen before?

What famous photographs are missing? I would say that this one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunchtime_atop_a_Skyscraper)belongs in the Top 50. Also this one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharbat_Gula).

What say you, NSG?

This one (http://www.cs.utah.edu/~hatch/images/europe/berlin.guard)is definitely missing.

Because you're made of phial.

I'm made of the Phial of Galadriel? That'd make me the ultimate ToME artifact!

*ahem* we now return to our previously discussed photography thread.

I can't really post a link to the one I thought was missing, but it probably isn't a very important one anyway, other than locally.

what on Earth possessed Churchill to wear that coat?

I've seen 18 on them before, but yeah they're missing that picture of that chick.

I'd say Fearne Cotton is more a girl you have to see at work though

Elvis was pretty famous (http://www.8notes.com/images/artists/elvis-presley.jpg)

Ms Monroe's generally remember for this one (http://www.gallerym.com/images/work/big/associated%20press_marilyn_monroe_seven_yr_itch_L.jpg)

Mandela (http://www.noutopia.com/Resources/person_nelson_mandela_in_prison.jpg)

Need a WWI, though to be fair I'm struggling to think of an individual iconic image.

There are several of those that don't seem to be "famous photos" so much as "photos of famous events/people."

Famous events or people to the US - who the hell cares about a picture of some obscure baseball player?

Some are a bit US-centric, for sure, but not exclusively so.

EDIT: and, c'mon, 'Tennis Girl' isn't exactly a world-famous shot either. Cuter than Jackie, though.

Um. Jackie Robinson is not exactly "some obscure baseball player."

I certainly agree that they're excessively US-centric, though - and I also think that particular photo fits in my category of "photos of famous people" rather than "famous photos," and thus really shouldn't be included.

I still don't think Jackie Robinson is any more significant than a picture of the first Chinese person to play professional snooker. I admit I added Tennis girl as a joke.

Indeed, some are hardly good photographs.

The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand at Sarjevo by the Serbian Nationalist,Gavrillo Princips, in 1914 was the shooting that led to millions of deaths in World War 1 (and that was only the dress rehearsal to WWII):

The captions for those photos read like they were co-written by Tinky Winky and La La. But I'm glad they included Florence Owens Thompson. I have that photo on my wall, and will always find it very poignant.

As for missing photos, I'm bemused they left out Kevin Carter's famous photo (http://iusbpreface.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/kevin_carter.jpg).

Other possible choices:
- Paul Simonon on the front of London Calling (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/00/TheClashLondonCallingalbumcover.jpg);
- the starving PoW (http://www-tc.pbs.org/thepriceoffreedom/images/features/tertiary-starving-pow.jpg) (couldn't find a bigger image);
- and, for the 21st century, this one (http://visibility911.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/card_tells_bush.jpg).

Well said Quint! Yes, the caption writer did not do much justice to many of the photos and included such nauseating and vacuous comments - th eflag waving particularly annoyed me.

I liked the photos that you included.
I started looking through the Auschwitz ones but gave up because I got sick of trawling through obscenity.

There are more iconic Fall of the Berlin Wall photos than that, I think he just grabbed one.

Has anyone ever seen the captured Saddam photo? How did that make it?
What about this (http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/saddamstatue.jpg)

And I know they are missing another old black and white one but I forgot what it was while going through them to look for it.

This is a photo that has always haunted me, of a Spanish Civil War soldier being shot - the photo was taken by the great Robert Capa. Apparently some people argued that the photo was "staged" but Capa's other negatives apparently refute this allegation:

The ones of the "smiling" Chinaman enduring the "death by a thousand cuts" method of execution. Remarkable if he really was happy, but oddly powerful either way. I won't link to it, obviously.

I'd say about half of them were new to me, actually. Most of the ones I've already seen I've seen from history classes.
