Help me move house!

Lapse

Well, not exactly. If you want to come and help me move the fridge it'd be great, but more specifically, I want you to help me get motivated for it.

I despise moving, especially because I get the feeling that 3 months down the track I will be moving again. I have lived in the same house of 18 months and have accrued a huge amount of crap. So far I have filled 2 moving boxes with books alone.

So, who wants to motivate me, somehow.

(See, here i am posting a topic on NS, when I should be doing something.)

well moving house is one of the most stressful things the average joe has to contend with so i suppose taking time to relax when moving is probably important.

I know buy a yoga CD!.....? or an exercise thingy...um running yeah try running for a while....then when you get tired you can move things about and then...ah...eat something nice?

Moving sucks! I've done it dozens of times in my adult life and I still don't know how to organize it properly. If you have the money, hire someone to do the packing and moving for you. If you don't have the money, you're just going to have to suck it up (I hate that phrase) and get it done. Remember, the more you do now, the less you'll have to do later - and doing things last minute is counterproductive - I did the whole move to Colorado last minute and, after two years, I'm still finding things I didn't want to keep and wondering where the things I really need are.

My main tip is simply to play music while you pack. Keeps your mind off the memories and all.

I'm under your floorboards, and I've got diarrhoea. Stay by all means, but it'll start seeping through soon.

Hope that got you going.

Moving is a huge pain.

Stay in the current house so you don't have to deal with all your vital stuff being boxed up for weeks and all your semi-vital stuff being boxed up for months.

Laspe by; its simple. Just do it one box at a time. Moving is never fun, especially if you lived their for a while. Just aim to get one room done at a time. And if you need to. Make a castle out of all the filled boxes. The more filled boxes, the bigger the castle. I mean that would get ANYBODY motivated.

Whichs reminds me I moved from my house of 15 years up the street last month(house got sold) and I still got unpacked boxes in my room. So good luck with that. :P

get rid of everything but the bare necessities and start afresh!

(better yet if you have insurance burn your house down and collect the money:))

1. Get off NS and the internet
2. Buy loads of beer (or other alcohol of your choice)
3. Invite friends, tell them to bring loads of beer (or alcohol of their choice)
4. Lay out the plan to pack quickly and efficiently
5. Proceed to implement the plan
6. Wake up the next morning terribly hungover
7. Start packing...

I would, unfortunatly, it would mean I would have to take all the crap to the dump. And the dump is further away than the place I am moving into!

My housemates probably wouldn't like me.

I am hoping I can fit all the stuff I actually need in 8 boxes. Good luck making a castle out of that.

I have packed 2 boxes. already I have had to open each of them once. These were the non-essential things <_<

I'm under your floorboards, and I've got diarrhoea. Stay by all means, but it'll start seeping through soon.

mmm... I think a dirrhoea affected guy-off-the-internet is still better than moving. Atleast you share my discomfort. The boxes, and all my crpa I have to move don't <_<

My main tip is simply to play music while you pack. Keeps your mind off the memories and all.
Oh, it's not the memories. Believe me, this house is a pile of shit. It is just getting all the crap into my car, and then out of my car again 10 ks down the road.

I think I could easily live out of the crap I could fit in a suitcase. Unfortunatly I was 'given' some nice beds, and lounges by my parents when they moved up to Mackay. Unfortunatly this means I have to juggle them when moving. It would be fine If i actually needed them. I don't.

A yoga CD? That's just one more thing I have to pack!!! As for running, my shoes are already packed. Eating: Over the next week I shall be living off a diet of 'miscellaneous freezer stuff I threw in there 6 months ago and completely forgot about".

Focus on where you are moving to, Lapse. Visit the place and check out its space. Then work out what junk to send to the salvos because you won't really be needing it.

Don't get sentimental about crap you probably don't need.

What are the essentials?
What aren't?

oh yeah and locate the essential places to visit at your destination.
places like eateries, supermarkets (or a way to buy lots of food), distances from fuel station, places of entertainment (need i say more?) and a muddy field to call up the LG monster from his slumbers.

I love moving. you get to re-arrainge things in your new place, toss out what you don't need, sell what you can, it's the ultimate house cleaning experience!

seriously. if you can, take it slow. move a couple of shelves at a time, a couple of desks. get those positioned the way you want to. after all, if you have the time, take it. it's harder to move furniture with boxes in the way. then when you got it set up the way you want, move the boxes. by room, by items (clothes, computer stuff, etc...)

getting motivated for it? that's tough.

I am within a block of:
KFC, an adult store, a funeral parlour and place that sells water skis...

Handy.

I don't know much about moving, but asking the people of these awesome tubes was an idiot move.

And the title gave me the impression you were asking us how to physically move your house to a new location. Unless your house had wheels, moving it is going to be hard.

If your house is too big to move in one piece, you're going to have to dismantle it and reassemble it in the desired location. Trailers make moving your house so much easier, unless the trailer isn't your house.

No... middle of summer. Try moving when it is 36C, and as humid as the average sauna. I was wearing just shorts, and was still drenched within 5 mins!

I'm pretty excited because I just found out that virtually all my politics students got into the courses that they had applied for.

Well since you've moved the advice is probably too late, but I've always found having about a week overlap is best. Nothing worse than having to move everything in one day.

Don't start packing too early or you'll just open the boxes to find stuff, but don't do it too late or you'll run out of time. I always found the best way was to just put a day aside and do it all at once, gives you a real sense of satisfaction.

somewhere below 20 Celsius over here with windchill. plus my shoes suck, so my feet were drenched and freezing.
