He was arrested and booked on suspicion of bartering.

"booked on suspicion of bartering"....Hopefully they phrased it a bit better in the cop shop, otherwise he might have thought he'd gotten away with it if it was a cash for goods deal....

If "some money" is $16,000 then I suspect the beer might not have been the prime motivator. Although I'll grant you it makes a better headline.

Unless I'm much mistaken about the meaning of "barter", I'm surprised.

I think that maybe charges of exploitation of a minor of age, exploiting/incitating prostitution, being accomplice in an attempted statutory rape, abuse of parental power, attempted slave trade and (why not?) tax evasion would have been more appropriated.

If the charges are just "bartering", follows logically that selling one's own daughter for money is ok, one just has to use the legal tender.

I believe the Bible endorses this kind of thing.

Both men in this incident were named Jesus. Rather . . . suspicious, don't you think? There could be an entire underground organization of Bartering Jesi out there, exchanging goods and/or children for other goods and/or children without ever informing the government or paying the proper taxes.

Police said the practice of arranged marriage in some cultures is not relevent in the case, and even if it were, California law doesn't go for it when one or both parties have been coerced.

Those comments, nothing in the article seemed racist to me. Looking back, I could probably have phrased it better.
