Just wondering:
1. What bands do you believe to be WAY overrated?
2. What bands are good but you're tired of the same handful of songs the radio stations play?
I know I've often thought a band sucked, but later learned that my opinion was based on the fact that 2 or 3 mediocre songs were being played by the radio stations and that they had some really good stuff that never got airtime. But that's not as much fun as saying that the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, The Killers, and AC/DC are WAY overrated
*awaits flaming*
1: Jonas Brothers, and Hanah Montana. Course, I don't even give them a rating.
2: At the risk of dying, I'll say Green Day. I'm sick of American Idiot (the album and the song.)

I am going to only list actual musicians, assuming that we can all agree that the teeny-bopper pop crap that is pumped out is garbage.
1. Led Zeppelin. John Bonum and Jimmy Page are fine, but there are so much better, some even from the same time period! And no, you are not "indie" or "underground" or whatever just because you listen to a band from the 70s you pretentious , wanna be high school/college stoner dousche.
2. Pink Floyd. Love em. But if I hear "Hey You", "Money", or "Comfortably Numb" one more time, someone is going to die.

I hear you, as my dad has always said "Led Zeppelin were the hegemons of rock for years, and they used their time very poorly.
2. Pink Floyd. Love em. But if I hear "Hey You", "Money", or "Comfortably Numb" one more time, someone is going to die.
Which is why I own all of their easily accessed albums on CD, and a few on vinyl. I get to skip the endlessly repeated songs.

Exatly. Songs like "Learning to Fly", "Time", and "Meddle" are great. And so were the songs I mentioned earlier. Until I heard them every single day at 4 pm driving home from school in my old, CD-playerless car.

Ugh. At work the others like to listen to the "Classic Rock" station. You'd think there would be more variety, what with the two decades of music they can choose from. The oldies station that plays doo-wop and classic rock & roll from about 1955-1965 or so has better variety and better music overall.

Classic Rock stations are essentially the Van Halen-AC/DC-Led Zeppelin station, with a few of the most overplayed Aerosmith songs thrown in for good measure.

All we get here is Hey You and Another Brick in the Wall.
I would put Skynyrd for the second but one of the two radio stations worth listening to plays more than just Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird.
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Nothing I listen to is played on the radio any more (probably because they arn't rock/don't play relentless drivel that only idiots like/havn't released an album in 5 years)

Led Zeppelin. The most versatile rock band ever. They can play anything and make it sound good.
Sigh just proves I am old.
ahem. Over rated. I think there are plenty that are over played which will tire you of just about anything.
Counting Crows a couple of good tunes but then ehhhh
Bob Dylan - Some people treat him like he is prophet or something and that whole thing about not making eye contact with him????
Bruce Springsteen - he had some really great tunes but a lot were kind of yeah okay I don't hate but....

1. AC/DC, Zeppelin, basically anything that could be referred to as "metal," but predates Iron Maiden. (The exception being Black Sabbath).
2. Metallica's "The Unforgiven," and it's unlovable, bastard children. The first song was whiny and pointless, so why did it need a pair of sequels? And why do all three of them have to keep getting radio play?

I don't want to hear anything my Creedence Clearwater Revival again for a looooong time. Van Halen is a waste of airtime, as is Pearl Jam.
The Beatles are good, but I'd like to hear more than the half-dozen songs that are played now.
I like Kansas and The Eagles better now that I've heard more than the usual radio hits.

I don't even know that...
1. What bands do you believe to be WAY overrated? anything that gets played on clear channel, vh-1, or mtv (also i think the stones were the most over rate band in all of music history, but then sinatra and his rat pack probably were in their day too. its tempting to say the same about the beatles that first time they toured the u.s., oh and of course elvis, i put him in pretty much the same league as the stones. the only thing is, elvis DID introduce 'white' audiances to "black" popular music, or so the legend goes, and the beatles, DID redeam themselves when they caught on and caught/helped create, the 'hippie' era, after about their second or third alblum AFTER that first u.s. tour.)
2. What bands are good but you're tired of the same handful of songs the radio stations play? well i can't say because the radio stations i listen to DON'T play "the same handful of songs". the one i listen to most often, every two hours switches to a completely different genre. its one of those indipendent non comercial community stations. the other two i listen to, when kvmr is playing one of my less favorite genres, one is the local npr classical station and the other is the local npr jazz station.
most of the time, i just listen to the music on my computer though, which is stuff, free samples, from the websites of 'bands' that play stuff i like, mostly ambient synthasiser electronica, and then a whole range of just about everything other then rap, country or top 40. everything from ram bodgens, to celtic, to nepali, to anime themes, to filk (folk music of imaginary folk who are charicters in fantasy and science fiction stories), to ethnomusicological, to really early and ancient music, to native american musicians, to ..., yah, just about anything other then rap, country or top 40, even some, very little, that is unusual in its own genre of some of those.

1. What bands do you believe to be WAY overrated?
Way, way too long to list.
I might include Metallica after the Black Album (Vertigo). And Rammstein.
About issue #2, the radio here play only an ultra-small selection of Queen. "Another one bites the dust" ("Annamose a fà du toast" in its romanesco variant ;) ), "We will rock you" and "We are the champions", and that's all.

1. Mägo de Oz, I'm sorry Spanish rock, and although I enjoy this band, I feel they act more as a copy-cat of bands like Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden.

Most modern music and a lot of the classic rock people put up on a pedestal.
1. Alice in Chains, Puddle of Mud, Killswitch Engage, and all those other bands that sound pretty much the same.
2. AC/DC is WAY overrated... While I like their music, Led Zeppelin is overrated (I prefer the Yardbirds), along with Pink Floyd. As a big Deep Purple fan, I'm also quite sick of hearing Smoke on the Water... They have many other songs that are way better and are hardly played.
As a guitar teacher, the biggest pet peeve I have is when I have a teenage student who wants to play like Linkin Park... Linkin Park sucks... Probably the most overrated band in modern time. After three weeks of teaching them how easy Linkin Park music is, I'm usually successful at changing their taste in rock.

Alice in Chains, yeah. Their time, place and dead vocalist get them classified as Grunge by a lot of people (sometimes, me), but if Facelift had been recorded in San Francisco, it would have been classed as Metal.
