140 Year Old Lobster Recieves Pardon from Death Row
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28589278/
George, the 20 pound (about 10kg) lobster who is estimated to be 140 years old was freed from captivity by "City Crab and Seafood" in New York; and will be free to live out the rest of his natural life in the Atlantic Ocean in a no trapping zone.
Doesn't it just warm your hearts?
I know this is a hard case to crack, but with a little discussion we can get to the meat of what might be a stimulating debate.

Canada, Maine, what's the difference?
Anyway, it would be pretty pointless to put him back in a trapping area, where the dumb thing would just get caught again.

It lasted 140 years without getting trapped the first time. I'd say it was either a fluke, it's getting old and senile or it wanted to be trapped. Maybe it consumed a bunch of mercury and was trying to poison a party of rich asshat New Yorkers. It's in Maine seawater right now going, "Fuck! Fuckin' PETA!"

That's what you think, but I know these lobsters. When you see one of them behind glass at that age, you can tell he's been in and out of the system for decades. Maybe he's been living under an assumed name, or maybe his record was sealed, but you can trust me, that ugly bastard has done time before.

er... no, it doesn't warm my heart. why?
Resturant 'tanks' don't care about the longevity of their seafood. only that they are alive. many crustaceans kept in those conditions are actually worse off, sporting internal injuries that most often times are fatal, they are starved, kept in water that, in most cases, are dangerous in both Acidity as well as batcerialogical, in overcrowded conditions and let's not forget any injuries sustained during capture and transport.
I don't give this guy alot of chances surviving in the wild.

PETA and the restaurant guessed George's age at about 140, using a rule of thumb based on the creature's weight.Does anyone else doubt that this lobster is really 140 years old?

Probably not a bad idea as the meat might be a little tough. However, this has been done before and the lobster did not survive. It would have warmed my heart even more if the chef had made lobster thermador http://recipegal.com/seafood/Lobster-Thermador.htm and invited me to eat a double portion for free. :)

They would if they could.
Lobstermen scoff at the notion that lobsters deserve pity. The common American lobster, known to scientists as the Homarus Americanus, is a cannibal that they say pulls the legs off of crabs before devouring them.
"Rest assured, if the shoe was on the other foot, Mr. Lobster wouldn't hesitate to dine on your pancreas," said Greg Griffin, a 42-year-old Cape Elizabeth, Me., lobsterman who started trapping when he was 10 years old. "If you could see the lobster on the ocean floor, it would make a beautiful star in a horror movie."

The trauma isn't soo bad. as long as therapy is given. say time spent in a properly maintained tank with Good nutritious meals for a couple of days then shipped out into the ocean.
the problem is the physical damage done when caught, shipped and while in the tank. :(

PETA is the activist version of the 101st Fighting Keyboarders. They'll talk the talk and condemn others for not living up to "ethical standards" and behavior that most often, they themselves will completely ignore at leisure.
They've gassed cats and dogs they take out of animal shelters under the lie of finding them a home, and keep their corpses in walk-in freezers to use for propaganda later on.
Their chairthing Ingrid Newkirk makes plenty of remarks like calling the slaughter of chickens for food "Worse Than The Holocaust" I kid you not, and she's made it clear she opposes using animals for medical purposes. Even though she's a diabetic who uses bovine-based insulin to keep her sorry ass alive.
