So, tonight the Myth Busters tackled the Conspiracy Theory that the Moon Landing was faked. They took some of the many theories out there and basically busted them all. While it's nice to see common sense on TV, one of my major concern is that the Moon Landing Conspiracy Theories nuts are going to come out of the wood works and claim that NASA has the Myth Busters in their back pocket.

So did anyone else watch this, what did ya think of it?

They did that months ago I thought...

because the moon is tidally located(or at least nearly)(ie its day is as long or longer than the amount of time it takes to revolve around the earth) so only one side is ever seen by earthlings. so we see the "light side" and the "dark side" is the side not seen until the 60/70's.

technically it doesn't have a dark side, as that side faces the sun at times.
But what you're refering to is that it takes as long to rotate on it's axis as it does to rotate around the Earth. Therfore we only ever get to see the same side.


unless you're talking about Pink Floyd's seminal album. But I can't explain that without ingesting an inordinate amount of illicit substances. And you can't understand my explanation unless you follow suit.

This MythBusters was actually the only thing that finally convinced my ex that the moon landing was real. He didn't fully trust science, but he trusts MythBusters. :p

I'm surprised MB took this one, I read somewhere on the MB forum that Adam didn't want to do any Conspiracy myth or Oogie Boogie myth such as Bigfoot, Ouija Boards, Ghost etc.

Think of the Sun, then the moon rotating around the earth, at times the earth will block parts of the sun shining on the moon.

Put a torch on the ground and then place a ball in front, rotate another ball around it and you can see.

The only moon landing hoax proof that seems possible is the claim that the lander hatch was too small for an astronaut to pass through, or the claim that there was insufficient shielding from electrical interference and cosmic radiation. I don't have the mean to investigate either claim, and haven't seen any real evidence to support either one.

Or is that the reason Mythbusters didn't cover those? :p

There is no dark side of the moon, really. As a matter of fact, it's all dark.

A moon day is equal to a moon year (28 days), so when you look up at the sky at night, you see the same side of the moon each night. The other side is the dark side of the moon. Really, though, the "light" side is just the sun'd reflection off of the moon.

What if, in 1969 they hadnt quite perfected the technology required to make it to the moon, But, because they had set a deadline of making it to the moon before the end of the Decade, they had to find a way to make it look like they went, or face political embarrassment, so they filmed it in 1969...

But, later they had a REAL moon landing and planted the current evidence, and destroyed the original tapes, thereby making it look to the outside world like we went to the moon before 1970 with the actual physical evidence we see today, when in reality we went in 1975...

Its a bit of a stretch, but we were trying to find a way to make it work while incorporating the evidence presented in MythBusters, lol...

Did the mythbusters figure out why there's lines in space in the photos taken on the moon? That one detail always stuck in my mind...

The shielding issue is a common mistake. The vast majority of the free radiation in space is in the form of high energy protons and similar particles. While these are extremely damaging to tissue, they do not penetrate materials well - a few centimeters of plastic and foil will easily deal with enough of them to reduce the exposure levels to something harmless. False, by the following: we note that the Russians were also tracking the US moon mission. As a result, had the US faked it, the Russians would have known. Given the PR coup that the mission provided, one wonders why the Russians would still be silent about the mission being a hoax.

Unpossible. All the equipment was pretty much ready to go by the start of 1969. It was just a matter of testing it.

The US program was really conservative. Administrators and engieneers constantly attempted to mitigate risk through thorough testing both on the ground and in orbit. If we tried the Korolev OKB-1 model, we could have been on the moon earlier then that (and hopefully had only a few orbital accidents).

The real conspiracy behind Apollo is not that the moon landing were faked, but what they found when they got there and why they never went back (as well as truncating the science program enormously).

You also have to consider the reasons for going in the first place.

The faked landing thing is just a sideshow to keep people off balance.
