Never heard of you. Heh...let me think, aren't you a libertarian or something? People with very different beliefs to mine tend to stick in my mind. You've never been a total asshole to other posters as far as I'm aware, so I don't remember you from any memorable flame-exchanges. So thats just about all I have.

I think I'm probably known, if at all, for being hopeless at debates (despite invariably being right) and instead trying to turn any serious discussion into a bad-pun thread or respond to those I disagree with a sarcastic blast of hostility without addressing any of the points they've actually made.

I remember you from good recommendations in music threads,,,and from the fact that on a few threads I was going to comment on you'd already earlier said what I was going to say, only far better t'd have said it. Then again, I have been around here with other accounts (all with about ten posts) since about 2003/4, so you might well be right that newer people may not know you given that you've been quiet recently.

Must be a generational thing, kids these days just leave letters out willy-nilly. Why back when I was a boy, we had to work hard to even get a single letter. I worked 50 hours a week down a coal mine just so I could afford to write a letter to my old mother. Did I mention I had to walk 20 miles to the mine each day, both ways uphill....

However, since I've gone through the unwonted mental exercise of thinking about this, I'm not gonna waste it. Herewith:

This is a forum that encourages some degree of community among its members. It goes to the extent of having a stickied "about the posters" thread.

But on an internet forum, to many readers, a person's physical image isn't "them". We build up pictures of people from what they say. So, for example, there are a couple of people who post often in religious threads whom I "see" as, respectively, a slick Jesuit priest and the scruffy rabbi from the crime novel series On Friday, the Rabbi (whatevered). Despite the fact that neither claims religious office (and I don't know their gender or religion, if any).

It's not particularly attention-whorish that people want to know what their "picture' is in others' minds. I think that kind of background knowledge can even help the forum run more smoothly; it underlines that it's a person you're talking to, not a computer.

I'm just very, very glad I began building up my images of others before everyone got avatars.
