They used to. A law change under Bill Clinton changed it to only 10 years after the end of their presidency. Clinton will be the last president to recieve lifetime protection.

Why did they change it?

The limited resources of the Secret Service, the agency's high turnover rate, and the cost of protection of people who cease to be all that important, perhaps?

They might have to change it back, given the strength of feeling some people have towards Bush.

Smart. Blackwater is hated as much as Bush, and what with him no longer having any power, people will have trouble deciding whether a revenge shot or killing a Blackwater goon would be more productive in the long term.

It's like how Cheney as VP was a better assassination deterrent than any flak jacket :)

It won't have any effect on his safety here because he's rich as fuck, but it does mean he can never leave the country again, since private bodyguards are not legally obligated to defend someone if a foreign power attempts to arrest said someone. In fact, I believe they are legally obligated to not interfere.

I doubt anyone is going to need secret service expiration to take a shot at Obama.

Doesn't mean they wouldn't interfere anyway if paid enough, and you forget the sheer amount of political fallout that would come from a foreign power attempting to arrest a former American President. It's not going to happen unless the United States seriously falls from power, and I'd kind of like that not to happen, thank you.

poetic justice suggests the shrubery and his posse be extrodinarily rendered to face the international criminal court of justice at the earliest possible convenience.

rummys been the real mastermind i think, him and rove and chenny, but rummy especially, i mean he's been in on the skullduggery since under raygun and possibly earlier.

of course its heritage and rand that have been the polit buroh of the corporate mafia whose decisions they've been implimenting, at least that's how it looks from the cheep seats where i've been sitting.

well the new bossess are gonna want to avoid spliting people over what to do about the old bossess, which means there may not be too much we can expect THEM to do, but they're not the only potential extrodinary renderers, secret service or no secret service.

termination with extreme prejudice is too easy. the perps need to face real judicial proceedings first, as is evidenced by the footwork and dances they'be doing to avoid doing so. otherwise, they just get offed, we'll never know the real half of it, what they've been up to, what traps we don't yet know about they may have set to bring about the destruction of the web of life, and with it everything that breathes oxygen on the face of planet earth.

Prediction - in 10 years' time, nobody will care.
Cameroi
08-01-2009, 10:00
in ten years no one will care if america has 'fallen' from its position of world dominance, or at least its current preditory degree of it. and i could give a rat weather it does or not.

other then i do hope and pray it will at some point become less preditory and more of a partner to the rest of the world, for things like peace and sustainability, instead of continually making it a more brutal place for the "profit" of a VERY few at the expense of just about everyone and every thing, its own citizens and the very web of life itself included.

Not saying it'll happen, but there are certainly people with a reason to give it thought who will still be around in ten years.

Maybe it's supposed to be a mandate for bushes. As in, in 2019, all secret service agents will be responsible for trimming the bushes at the White House. Which I don't agree with. That's the job of the landscaping crew.

Given that alien invasion/a meteorite impact/the passing-by of the planet Niburu/nuclear war/biblical apolcalypse (delete as appropriate) is going to occur in 2012, I'd be very surprised if Bush, the Secret Service, or humankind in general is still alive in 2019. The only creatures that will survive the disaster will be vermin like cockroaches, rats, and estate agents.

Unless they're a savvy former Arkansas governor who realise you can have your cake and eat it too, if you maintain every former President protection, and your own, but pull it from future Presidents
