Apathy: do you have it?

The Holidays usually bring us joy and happiness. Of course, it also sometimes brings us the famous ''Holiday blues''. Well, I kind of recieved '09 with the Holdiday blues and this made me think certain things. For example, it made me miss being a 10 year old waiting for Santa Clause. It made me miss the huge family gatherings for the 24th. It made me cry out like a baby. And then, on the morning of Jan. 1st., I woke up with what I feel, to this day, is a bad case of apathy.
What is apathy? Let us go into definitions, to be legal on the subject. Apathy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apathy) is: (according to mighty if fallible Wiki) a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation and passion.
Before this OP turns into a blog, and I can already hear the catcalls from the back of the audience to ''get a blog!'', I wanted to ask NSG 3 things:
1st.) What is, to you, apathy?
2nd.) Do you suffer or have suffered from it?
...and...
3rd.) What do you do to get out of an apathetic phase?
Baldwin for Christ

1.) Apathy is a localized minima in the sinusoidal function of giving a shit.
2.) I've been apathetic. But then I remember how Jesus suffered on the cross, so I go ahead and give the stripper another $20.
3.) Emerging from apathy just requires you to go forward...then back...no, wait, forward, then back...forward, back, forward, back...oh, Nan...NAN....>AAAAAHHHH...

1) My normal level of enthusiasm for life. I can't even be bothered to be nihilist.
2) I wouldn't say I 'suffer' from it, as it's a lifestyle choice :p
3) Someone else to dangle something shiny / exciting / interesting in front of me and then kick me up the backside.
Apathy at work is normal though. I had to work on the "veneer of enthusiasm" thing for years, but I finally have it sorted now so I don't get fired.

According to your definition of apathy, it certainly describes how I behave in school (apathy and lethargic, to be exact). The reason I act apathetic is that the people in my school have nothing of value to communicate to me. And I really hate talking just for the sake of hearing my voice, which apparently everyone in my school obsesses over. So, for the most part I'm labeled by many as anti-social, as no one seems to approach me for conversation which keeps me for the most part content.

You must tell me your secret. My apathy is growing and it shows at work. I've called on my contempt towards others when working and I'm tired of being warned by an idiot with only 4 years of institution for it.
See, now I'm also an elitist and I hate that.

Yeah, being apathetic can often give people the impression you are elitist, when really you actually couldn't care less. But appearing to not care makes you appear aloof.
There is no secret apart from being willing to die a little inside each day, as you force yourself to look like you give a shit about something mind-numbingly irrelevant. Luckily, the more you do it, the easier it is. Until you almost find you really ARE giving one. :eek2:
Top tip - get a new job. It'll look less disingenuous, as people won't notice a change. Plus it's easier when the scenery changes.

You probably just care too much about what other people think about you. That's not elitism, it's uncertainty. And before you get angry at me: we all suffer from uncertainty. Especially those loud-mouthed, arrogant and seemingly self-confident individuals that gallop around on internet forums like they own the world. Newsflash: they do not. They usually don't even own the cellar they dwell in.
I am of a different breed, of course. I am far beyond the feeble "elitist" title, for it's too weak a term to describe the perfection and glory that is me. But it's not like any member of this forum didn't already know that. Behold that what I am and weep, for I truly reign supreme!

No, when I meant that I was acting like an elitist was when I stated that my boss is an idiot with only 4 years of high school, nothing more. That made me feel like an elitist because of all my education and I don't like that. I shouldn't be like that or say those things. Elitism is bad.

Self-criticism is not a bad thing, but don't try to be reasonable towards idiots. You'll just end up like an idiot yourself, and that would be a waste of brainpower.

Then, every person on nationstates with an undergraduate GPA of less than 3.98 shall be permitted to spank you a number of times equal to 100 divided by their percentile ranking on their standardized entrance exams, rounded to the nearest integer.
Then I will make love to you on a pile of failed GED exam attempts until you shriek from thunderous, howling orgasms.
And in the coarse, raw throated aftermath, you will tell me of your newfound humility until I am satisified.

Like any profession, they very. Some are more skillful, some more beautiful, some have talent, some compensate with hardwork, some don't belong in the field, some couldn't be anywhere else, some give great GFE, some PSE, but always use latex or risk the STD.

We can only dance about you, in our digital ellipses, mourning the revolutions that take us into the night when your face is hidden from us, and loving the mornings that raise you up on our horizons...
We must keep our ideal distance, for if we should wander too far from our orbits, we are lost to a cold and empty void without you, and if we come too close, we are burned, consumed, blinded with how amazing you would be IRL.
So instead, we turn, with our seasons, the warm winds and cold snows coming and going with how we tilt to you...

I don't know if I'm apathetic, or simply desensitized. I watch the news, and anymore, I just don't care, I don't care that someone just killed five innocent people in Israel with a bomb. I don't care that the world is in a delicate and potentially self-destructive situation. I don't care anymore. I'm not even sure I care about my family anymore. Wow. That's pretty...extreme. I can't say I've never had any feelings/thoughts like the ones you've just described, but I try to snap out of that as much as possible. I can't imagine being permanently stuck in a state like that. It's really unfortunate. I hope something or someone will help you out of that.
I suppose, though, that it is a good bit of armor against any pain that life could thrust upon you.
All the same, I do think it would be nice to add some fun little stops along the way on that long march towards death. I hope you can, will, and do. d: (:

That's the way in which Balwin for Christ expresses his love for the harlotus hispanus. He does adore that species.
I believe the proper scientific classification is harlotus hispanus auris cattus, a species discernible from the standard harlotus hispanus by their immediately recognizable soft, pointed black and pink ears. Scientists theorize that the harlotus hispanus auris cattus was a recent evolutionary split from the normal harlotus hispanus species, and their is great debate over whether to consider them an entirely separate species. As all known members of both species are female, it is impossible to determine whether a union between the two would produce fertile offspring. Nevertheless, the harlotus hispanus auris cattus is a much rarer and much more exotic species. It is said that all those who encounter this majestic creature will be gifted with good luck and happiness.

1) apathy is a state of not caring. Not being for, not being against...just not even really considering it.
2) yes.
3) generally, when it becomes pervasive, I absolutly have to get out into nature. I've been known to, on a -10 degree day with wind say "let's go to the beach and watch the sunset". Or say, at 4 AM after finally getting my roommates to wake up, "let's go snowboarding". Or say "I'm going somewhere", and then take off in my car and drive untill someplace just feels right to me. And then sit.

Yeah, I don't think I'm in that stage first. (no offense intended) But I am a bit worried because my job doesn't afford me being apathetic. I work with people, on a daily basis.
If your worried about your job Natsu my sweet, then you are not too apathetic, you'll be ok.
Need anything just let me know.

1st.) What is, to you, apathy?
2nd.) Do you suffer or have suffered from it?

3rd.) What do you do to get out of an apathetic phase?
1. What else would it be?
2. I don't suffer.
3. Less stress.

2. I don't suffer.Don't you let everyone else do that for you?
3. Less stress.Even less if you're in an alcohol coma. *nods*
The answer, of course, is weasels.

I'm glad someone pointed that out. I was thinking the same thing, especially when I read further down the thread and saw this: "My apathy is growing and it shows at work. I've called on my contempt towards others when working and I'm tired of being warned by an idiot with only 4 years of institution for it."
Such passionate/emphatic feelings cannot fall under the category of "apathy."
You must tell me your secret. My apathy is growing and it shows at work. I've called on my contempt towards others when working and I'm tired of being warned by an idiot with only 4 years of institution for it.
See, now I'm also an elitist and I hate that.
I think Natsu rather than Apathetic you are getting angry, maybe stressed. You're sounding like me when I finally caved and saw a therapist.. :(

Who cares...*shrugs*
Who gives a shit right...?
I think that describes excatly who I been for the last three years. Somebody who simply didn't give a fuck. No matter how much they believed they did, until lfie came crashing like a great wave upon their fortress on that rock and broke the mightly stone wall to peices and the warrior/king had to face his own mortally or forever perish.
I love NS for things like this. NS is where I get the News and keep the little faith I have lefted in the human race. Its probably the only place that makes me laugh out loud on a daily basic. Reminding just how much fun it is to laugh and FEEL alive.
But if your apathy fucks you up and keeps you from getting what you want, needed and deserves. Then I guess you have to chance. Thanks again NS for teaching about life and I can come one step closer to what I want/and need to become in life. I can't tell you how many times some NSers had describe what I was feelig or who I was to the last letter and helped me gain a better understanding of myself . :)

I certainly do...been drifting along for years lost in my own 'issues', not doing much to address them or caring much about anyone else. Showing signs of getting out of it now, true, but its a bit too late considering its not long until I leave university with nowhere near as much life-experience or confidence as I should have built up by now. I still feel like a scared twelve or thirteen year old, not an adult ready to function on my own in the world of work. I've been operating on the basis that "oh well, I'm good at exams, let everything else drift along apathetically, and maybe good results on the academic side might get me a job on its own". Strategy unsound.

Meh.
I absolutly have to get out into nature.
That sounds really cool. Maybe I should try that sometime.

Apathy is like insulation. It protects us allows to disassociate with things. It allows you to feel not responsible for the way things are. Caring take work, effort, enthusiasm, and energy.
It is not my fault, it is not my problem, if I ignore the problem maybe it will go away. I don't want to get involved because then their problem may become mine.

What? Where?
I never said anything about Ardchoille, because I hate her.
Three years ago, I was in New Zealand, doing a photoshoot for a condom company that I was doing some male modeling for.
Nobody told me that New Zealand has a bird called a Kea that is addicted to rubber, and that has a large, snapping beak not unlike a parrot.
Ardchoille, who has a minor in ornithology, was the bird safety officer on the shoot. Her negligence cost me several much needed centimeters. The one I have left isn't in mint condition, anymore, either.

You seem to have many unfortunate adventures with moderators and genitalia.
Before the post was deleted for spamming Valentasia's thread, I seem to remember the following
You: Ardchoille is five liters of awesome in a one-liter bottle
Me: Wouldn't that make her some kind of messy, liquid-y explosion?
You: Her awesomeness behaves as an ideal gas, with her modly powers increasing the pressure to 2 Atmospheres.
Unfortunately, our posts were deleted, as they had nothing to do with aliens building the moon, which was allegedly the topic...
