Fads & Trends you DO miss

Wilgrove

So what are Fads and Trends that you do miss!

Personally I miss seeing women having the goth/punk look. More women my age (and I'm 24) need to dress up in the goth/punk look.

What can I say, I like weird. I wish more women were weird.

Grunge should come back, it was so easy for me.

Day old hair. Check.
Warm shirt of softness. Check.
Concert shirt faded. Check.
Worn jeans. Check.
Skate shoes. Check.

I don't think I ever moved on, TBH.

it will, however, come as quite a shock when it's revealed to be a 1790s comeback, leaving us all in powdered wigs, breechers, and bodicies, looking quite confused.

by definition, a fad is not "weird", it's mainstream. What you inadvertently point out is the symptom of something that becomes popular because it's initially just edgy enough to allow everyone doing it to innerly proclaim "look at me, I'm different!"

Of course, being part of a fad doesn't make you "weird", it by definition makes you very, very normal.

They don't have to be different from everyone, just from you.

Seriously, the ridiculous standard for someone to be absolutely unique has always struck me as the last bastion of the square.

"You're not so different. See, that guy kinda looks like you, too!" Alright Abercrombie, you keep tellin' your self that.

Having got that pet peeve off my chest...

meh, the goth look has its place, it does have certain aesthetic qualities I admit. But I prefer collars for a whole other set of reasons, besides their association with goth/punk.

Yea, I do agree that the collar can be great in that setting, and trust me I have fantasies about that...I dunno, there's just something about a woman who does the whole goth look (either moderately or going all out) that gets my hormones running.

It's just not purely sexual with me.

THIS. ^

The supreme irony of "different" looks to me was always that the mind inside the weird look was far from weird itself. People who deliberately think things that are traditionally disgusting or offensive are cute and cuddly...y'know, trying hard to be weird.

I was a jeans-and-t-shirt kid in school, and still am when the forecast calls for comfort. I was fringe from the way I thought and the fact that I was both at odds with popular culture and shredding grade curves, too. So the nerds hated me right along with the preppies.

I still don't understand why it must be the clothing, and not the thinking, that sets people apart who wish to be unique.

I haven't seen an actual Mountie in this town, outside of parades on the first of July. Moose tend to stay out of urban areas. Even if they didn't, I'm confident that I could protect you, as all Canadian citizens are required by law to spend three years surviving in the wilderness on naught but maple syrup and bagged milk.

I miss pants with decent waist lengths, but those do seem to be coming back. I like the old style men's 501s...they were the absolute perfect fit. I want those back. I'd like the trend of women NOT bulging out of their pants and shirts all over the place to come back. That's just unattractive, and it's lasted too long.

Also guys wearing clothes that aren't literally falling off them. Tighter shirts and pants on men please. Not those stupid skinny jeans worn so the butt still sags...but clothes that FIT. It's not too much to ask.

I miss the days when rock musicians played good music. Rock peaked in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and early-mid 90s. Then it went downhill with the whiny and sceamy bands of today. Where are today's Rushes and Zeppelins? Nowhere. Even Metallica, one of the best bands ever, became less metal. I guess with Cliff Burton dead, they forgot how to make threash and speed metal.

Long hair needs to come back too.

And kilts. Glorious, glorious kilts. Why should the Scotts be the only ones man enough to put on skirts? Long hair and skirts....on men. Those too long gone fads need to come back...together. It will be the modern day equivalent of Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones joining Robert Plant and John Bonham.

And the cults today. Mass suicides. Kool-aid. Tom Cruise. What happened to the days when cults were more than just scams? If you're going to make a cult, you have to be serious. No mass suicides. No kool-aid. And you can't let Tom Cruise join. The moment Tom Cruise joins is the moment you know your cult is stupid. Sacrifices are okay, but you can't let Tom Cruise join.

This gives me an idea. I'm going to do it.

Metallica started going downhill when they booted out mustaine. He owns Hammett, but yes I do agree they began to lose their edge when Burton died. Every album after Kill 'em All became less and less metal.

Hard to know where to start. The shambolic nursery-rhyme-y-ness, the forget-inspiration-let's-just-steal-it lack of originality, the schizophrenic-yet-still-nonsensical lyricism, the indulgent meandering, the untidy lack of production... or, apparently, practise...

...and on top of that... the teenage guitarists routinely bastardising it.

In fact, the only thing it's really got going for it is - if you play it backwards, and kind of squint your ears, you can pretend it sounds a bit like 'Satan' is backmasked into it.

Anything less vague? I still think, musically, it's a nice song. It has a good harmony, nice riffs hear and there, some good melodies in part, and I don't think it's production was any worse than most other rock bands back then.

I didn't think I was being especially vague...

Jimmy Page has said, before, that he didn't spend much time working on pieces before they were recorded. I think it shows. Which is a shame, because it means he sold talent short, because he's not as bad as things like 'Stairway' would lead you to believe.

Musically, it's somewhere between okay and nauseating. It's a nursery rhyme... and the lyrics tend to reinforce it. The opening, which is so lauded, is stolen... not that that's automatically bad - R.E.M.'s 'Drive' has the same kind of heritage - but what exactly is LEFT? The nonsensical lyrics? The 'mary-had-a-little-lamb' saccharine sound?

It's not low-fi enough to sound orgainc, and not polished enough to sound produced. So it ends up coming across like a recording booth splurge by somewhat-talented amateurs.

I don't notice anything wrong with the production, I also like not perfectly polished sound, if that makes any sense.
