Ladytron - Runaway (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=PHMynl9QX7g&feature=related) (for proof that google is a cruel bitch google image Helen Marnie and it will suggest mira aroyo instead :p)

The Tings Tings have to be the most pathetic excuse for a band ever. Why Call to Power?! Why?! But I will admit, Untrust Us is a bad-ass song.

It really irritates me though. Crystal Castles are an awesome duo, but they're plagiarising cunts. A lot of their stuff is in fact creative commons 8-bit chiptune tracks with their vocals and a few more samples thrown over the top. And it's never credited.

"Gackt" sounds like the onomatopoeic term of gagging on a glob of hairy spoo. Great name for a band....

2008 passed me by without lulling me with its dulcet tones, it would appear.

Although Bloc Party's latest album has grown on me. Especially with the odd strange video (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=66xxck1TV-Y)...

The worst part about that video was when I recognised the Luger in the start. I've been reading to much about guns.

The PM was being critizised by foreigners in Japan, stating that Gackt was dissing Christianity and condoning suicide because of the imagery. It was quite hilarious to read about it because in this day and age, Japan is quite tolerant of other religions and the lyrics do not posses any reference to suicide. :p

If you're going to make a joke, you should've said it was Reload.

It's the only thing that I've heard from Metallica. Well, except One.You should research their back catalog more.

There isn't even anything good in the older stuff either. Its way too light for me. System of a Down, Slayer, Gorgoroth, and Kreator are all way better. Plus, none of them've ever destroyed their fan base and let a producer make them his bitch or freak on a leash (BAD MUSIC PUN ALERT!). Any Teutonic Thrash or Extreme Metal is way better. Racer X and DragonForce are too.

I'm sticking with metal. I know 20 year olds that listen to metal. My grandmother likes Gorgoroth. Mezmerize/Hypnotize are what I call "heavy artillery on steroids" albums. First 3 albums rule, and the last dual-album was pretty good. I :hail: to any artist who's got the guts to not sell out, and they didn't. That's why I'm into those kinds of bands. It depends on if you got the meaning out of the music, though. If you don't then you need to. I can't stand stuff that isn't multi-layered.

On another note, the absolute highlight of my year was when I discovered Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, best bands, opening the door for all the others that I like now. My (female) 23 year old guitar teacher listens to metal too, although she's mostly into death, I'm into black.

MIA - Paper Planes
Biffy Clyro - Mountains (I don't particularly like their newer stuff, but this is a tune)
Black Kids - Not Gonna Teach etc.
Elbow - Grounds for Divorce (another fairly long term Elbow fan here)
Ting Tings - Great DJ (yeah, better than That's Not My Name)

BYOB's lyrics are about war and the gov't. I listen to Cannibal Corpse, but prefer Scandinavian death and black metal b/c of all the rich taspestry-like undercurrents and multi-tiered compositions, instead of slight chord variations that're played in one huge fill-the-speaker pattern. I've listened to Dead Kennedy's but they're to me sell-outs in a way (bitching about money doled out wrongly, etc.). My guitar teacher's not a goth. She's actually very intelligent. There's two halves to SOAD.

Part 1: Pre Dual-Album jagged, oblique, elaborate nu-metal

Part 2: Nu-metal dieout period reliance on mixing of guitars drums and vocals. They did get more poppier but they're still better than most bands. I also like Black Sabbath, Tool, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead, Venom, Iron Maiden, The Beatles, Slayer, Megadeth, and tons other stuff such as jazz.

In response to that I've listened to only five Slipknot songs, I listened to their entire first album, stuff off Vol. 3, and some of Iowa. It all sounded to "I hate my life the world and no one understands me" to me. At least SOAD could crank out something like Roulette, Aerials, or Question! once in a while.

No, the culture has evolved and speead out, perhaps. There are still traditional goths around, and still some groups catering to those tastes.

Of course, it kind of depends on what you mean. If you mean bands like Good Charlotte are no longer getting sold beyond their talent, because that Hot Topic fad has passed, I agree. But then, Good Charlotte aren't exactly a goth band.

As actual instruments? No, not every band does. It's fine if your music is specifically 'electronic', or if it's impractical to include a whole orchestra on tour, but in place of normal rock band instruments makes your live performances much more dull, because half of it isn't even being performed.

I don't think proper electronic gigs are dull, quite the contrary.

Oh. The Ting Tings.

Well, there's your problem then; they're simply shit.

You wont be seeing any hatred from me, since I'm in a 'techno' band (although I don't like the connotations of the word techno).

Soft Ballet should be on that list, too... and Mana's pets (and maybe collaborators?) Schwarz Stein.

I was listening to one other of Mana's pets, Wakeshima Kanon. I don't know if you know her but if you like the cello and Mana's undertones on music, check her out.

The best song of 2008 is the same as it was in '07, '06 and all the way back to '02: Warriors of the World United

As for a song released in '08, it's Týr - Sinklars Vísa.

Oh, and also, with the amalgamation bit their comes a lack of originality too. Of course this is from my observations that one of the kids in my class likes them and he's an emo loser.

Their songs are awesome, and you'll be hard pressed to find anything completely original these days. And so what if the the person you know is an "emo loser" that doesn't de-track from Slipknots awesomeness.

For me, Malice Mizer, Buck-Tick and Dir en Grey are the best bands to come out of Japan.
Mono? Boris? Merzbow?

...Wait, some people listen to music in the same year they're written? What a silly concept!
Indeed. I'm still catching up on 2006.

yes, yes they did when I was your age I was loving songs like sugar (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xOA8QT-sk4M) and war whereas...seriously wtf was BYOB it was abysmal (though tbh it was going down hill with boom)
SOAD haven't released a really good album since 1998. And I don't expect another one...well, ever.

Biffy Clyro - Mountains
That was the only song they played at Reading that I actually liked. And you're right, it is indeed a tune.

What I mean is they never strive for something better than their last album, they rehash everything. I'm fine with the artists they ripped off of

(Marilyn Manson, Korn, nu-metal in general, etc.)

I must ask you to listen to Toxicity and tell me that isn't a good album. Or Steal This Album, their demos which show some different things that I hope they explore in the future, etc.

I saw them at Leeds and walked off about 15 minutes into their set.

Which is disappointing since for about 5 years they were pretty much my favourite band.

Didn't you say you'd only heard about 5 of their songs?

How can you base assumptions about what they 'strive for', or what they are 'rehashing' from a sampling that adds up to about one song per album?

i quite enjoyed all of the 80's bands new cd's

Alice Cooper - Along Came a Spider
Alice Cooper is from the 70's, or did Billion Dollar Babies and Alice Cooper Goes to Hell mean nothing to you?

So my contributions:

"1857" - Misanthrope (My French is terrible, so I can only pick up about 1/4th of the lyrics, but they're such great musicians that I hardly care about the rest)
"Lightning Storm" - Flogging Molly (The rest of Float was pretty awesome too, but this one really leapt out at me).
"Fish Out of Water" - Mudvayne (Pity about the rest of New Game, though).

"Lightning Storm" was definitely the winner for the year, though.

Ok, so I've not listened to it again now, but I've probably listened to it over a hundred times in the 7+ years since it was released. Toxicity isn't a good album.

Actually, it is, but that wasn't the point I made. I said they'd not made a really good album since '98. Let's be honest about this, Deer Dance and Jet Pilot are both filler, as is ATWA. Shimmy and Psycho aren't much better. Chop Suey! is catchy and therefore overplayed. That's nearly half the album.

Steal This Album was, is and will always be a bit pants. And also isn't a "demos" album. There are maybe three good tracks on it - Innervision, Mr Jack (which is actually one of their very early songs) and either Thetawaves or Roulette (I forget which). In fact, in four albums since their debut, SOAD have released maybe one album's worth of top-o'-the-range material.

I don't know those, but like the curious person I am, I'll take a look in YouTube for them.

Now, for cuteness purposes, I nominate ''Boku Wa Koushin Saremashite'', from Hirohashi Ryou for Best Song of 2008.

I've heard their first album in its entirety, first 4 tracks of Iowa, some of Vol. 3 and none of All Hope is Gone.
