I've never heard anyone say PO-TAH-TOES. I've also never heard "ursters;" I think Fred Astaire was just talking through his incredibly stylish hat.

Well there is a difference in how people say tom-ay-toes and tom-ah-toes and not much rhymes with them so the spuds take the hit.

No.
The original saying was about tomato, not potato.
But apparently some people somewhere got it in thier heads that folks somewhere might use the same pronounication difference on potatoes as well....

I am guessing you have not met more than a handful of people from Britain then. Everyone I know here in Britain calls them 'tom-ah-toes'... apart from one guy who calls them 'spew-fruit'.

I try to stick to this pronunciation: pəˈtātō , which I guess can be rendered more closely with po-tah-to . Then again, my pronunciation of english has been described like "sounds like english learned from a Wehrmacht manual"...:(

Anyway: patata! kartoffel! pomme-de-terre! batata! kartofel'!

Btw, also "taters".
