Actually, I think he defrauded all sorts of people from the wealthy to the ordinary. Keep in mind that one of the victims was the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, a charity that lost "nearly all" of their $15.2 million funds.

It does seem like a horrible, horrible stereotype. First there's the Dickensian name (pronounced "made-off") and then there's his deep involvement in Jewish charities. He's a step down for Jewish criminals, though, according to this Slate (http://www.slate.com/id/2207074/) article.
