##Thoughts on summer and the traditions of frogs.

In summer I find myself outside at night a lot, having a nice puff or a cool drink, and living in the sticks means living with frogs. We'd always go searching for frogs during family get togethers, making sure to check under every rock, sometimes finding a frog was easy.

Other times it was not.

Today I came to an amazing conclusion about why we sometimes wouldn't find frogs, and it's because we'd accidentally step on them in the process of looking for them. This had lead me to believe that as you step on a frog, it emits an odor that only it's frog brethren could smell. This scent would trigger their mourning modes and send a message to their brain telling them to find the now dead frog and eat it out of respect.

But how would they find the victim of footery, you ask?

The "death scent" sends electronic waves created by the stored energy in the frog's legs just for this task.

All in all, I believe frogs have a very modern view on death, and understand that it's their duty as frog friends they must not abandon their frog friend.

So, in your own opinion, what other animals have interesting mourning traditions?

It's to bad Amphibians are edging towards extinction. I kind of like the little buggers.

With modern science (http://www.gardeningwithkids.org/18-1625.html), they'll be around forever.

I think it's legit.

You should buy a few and tell us the results.

It might be fun. However I would be pissed if it turned out to be brine shrimp just like the Sea Horses from years ago.

Toads live under rocks surely?

You should buy a few and tell us the results.

I think they would go well with BBQ sauce >.>

This.

I think there are just less of them around here. The area is building up too much, for one. But even on roads where I once had to drive as if on a slalom course in order to avoid them, and there used to be several species present, I haven't seen any in years (fortunately they didn't come out until late at night, when I was the only car on the road). So I think there's more to it than the buildup.

There are still some, though. I darn near did step on one last year. It was only a little one, but I was glad to see it!

I see bullfrogs all the time. Toads however are less common.

Elephants. Those mighty mammals actually visit the skeletal remains of those who died.

oh its legit. i got some for my son when he was in kindergarten.

i figured they would be like hamsters. we'd have them for a year or so and be done with them. turns out that frogs dont die of "natural causes" they have to have a reason to die or they just keep living "forever".

we still have 3 of the damned things 17 years later.

Late one night
In Spain we sat
Lowly, smoked-filled, whispered chat
And idly throwing pebbles down
Into ponds where frogs did crown
The lilys that lay overlapped

Each pebble dropped towards a croak
Silence strangled bloated throats
But soon their need for love succeeded
High-thrown danger superseded
The chorus cries commenced anew
Calls for love that Spring deemed needed
And so the pebbles down we threw

Until one pebble found its mark
A strangled cry
Like a child
And suddenly the night went quiet

So we stopped this stoned-filled lark.

I dont think they are down here...We have more frogs than we know what to do with...

And when New Orleans is finally Swampland once again...well, at least gets its water back...Frogs'll have more habitat than they know what to do with, lol....

Not Sea Horse. Sea Monkey. There is nothing disappointing about Sea Monkeys. You just don't understand how cool they are. ;)

To be fair, I breed them. It's not so much old age as something you don't deal with on a daily basis.

I sell them to the local pet shop. They are fed to certain kinds of fish and small aquatic frogs.

The bigger pet shops have frozen brine shrimp, the little local one has my brine shrimp which are more expensive but they are fresh.

Ribbitt. Ribbitt.

Would Rufflino know if I or anyone else passed away from a trail of spoof threads on NSG? Or would you be the killee's killer?
