NationStates now has [a] newspaper, open to both NS1 and NS2 players. You can view the paper and submit articles here:
http://www.nschronicles.com

There are several categories to choose from when submitting pieces, and we also allow the submition of regional advertisements.

Also, there is an exclusive interview with Sirocco featured on the frontpage. He discusses NationStates and more. So go check it out now!

From the NationStates Webblog:

"26 December 2008
NS Chronicles

One of our players has decided it's high time NationStates had an online newspaper and asked if I'd be willing to give an interview. I obliged, and you can read the full transcript over at www.nschronicles.com

There have been attempts at making a newspaper for NS in the past, but they've all failed. Mostly because most people couldn't be bothered, but also, I think, because of the enormity of the task. There's always something happening, and it'd be impossible to keep abreast of all of it. But I wish them the best of luck! It's always interesting to read what someone else has written about NationStates, and there's not much material out there.

I look forward to reading later editions!
Posted by King Siroc at 1:07 PM"

We are very excited about the project and hope you will be too. Please visit often and send us your pieces. We would love to read them and share them with the NS world! And who knows, you might wind up on the frontpage. So what are you waiting for? Visit the NSC and get to typing!

Official NSC Statement:
"There are currently three of us working on the project though I am the chief administrator of the site. AW is the official spokesperson as the rest of us want to keep our identities closed so we can live in peace within the game.

AW has rattled my cage recently, encouraging me to finish the site. I almost fell off my chair when I first saw our thread in the Jolt forum. It was a complete "OMG" moment as I realized that we had never fully finished the site; and there it was being advertised.

NSC originally began as a small regional project. We just wanted to do it. Then we played with the notion of making it into something that all NS players could use. Then it got shelved as NSC was not the only project on my plate at the time and was intended to be released by the summer of 2009 anyway. Now we will be working overtime to get it up to speed.

There are a number of frontend items we never got to as securing the backend as well as the editors module took priority. There's more coming. What you see today in merely the skeleton of the site.

That being said, we are able to handle submissions and players are encouraged to do just that. The site can not be spammed as all submissions are first previewed for content. Subject matter is only limited to the imagination and creativity of the writers.

Some of the items currently on the table include but are not limited to adding the ability for readers to attach comments to any article, a photo gallery that would allow players to showcase flags, maps, crests, real-life images or anything else they so desire and all within their own personal photo albums. Players will have to first create a free account with the gallery before they will be able to use it so that we can ensure the site remains clean. The editors will have complete control over all content and accounts. The World Assembly page is currently being discussed so that the section can be expanded as well as the Featured Region page. All of this will naturally take time but nonetheless, we will be moving forward with the project with or without articles. It's a challenge thing and we love the challenge the site affords us.

With increased reader feedback we would then be able to tailor the site to meet the demand. I personally love the notion of the site developing due to nothing more than player input.

Anyone with ideas they want to share can leave feedback on the site itself or can contact us at admin@nschronicles.com"

I'd just like to point out to everyone that this isn't official. Neither OMAC, Max Barry, or the mods have anything to do with this.

I'm not saying we don't like it (I think it's a great idea), but we don't want anyone thinking we're officially associated with it.

i wanna write something, but have absolutely nothing of any interest to write about. my NS article would read something like...

"today i spammed. then i got into a pointless debate with someone many thousands of miles away, got annoyed, had a cup of tea and got on with my life. later i came back and spammed a bit more. what a great day http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/2226/smileis1.gif

It depends on what is submitted. We want this to be a community effort; as we recieve pieces they will be posted to the site if they are real and not spam or offensive. Our definition of offensive is explicit language, sexually explicit content, etc. We also intend to seek out interviews and write articles and editorials ourselves. :) In other words, NS controls what the NSC reports basicly.

And I want to second what Sirocco said. I don't want to give anyone the impression that I was insinuating the mods or anyone affiliated with NS is tied to this. I just thought it would be interesting to interview Sirocco and he accepted. Simple as that. This is an independent effort.

And lol about the witches and things. No one has ever said that about my nation name before. :D

Not to be a wet blanket....

This is not an "official" newspaper for NS and NS2. I don't have a problem with an NS newspaper, though I can't speak for the admin, but it does need to be understood that it's not an official part of the game.

Good idea to go offsite. I've seen previous attempts curl up and die in II and NS (circulation probs).

The sub-editing's not too bad, either -- for an online publication, that is  [/HARD-COPY SNOBBERY].

I saw some earlier good efforts become tedious to read because they ended up being concentrated on a small group of RPing nations. One of the problems with wholly player-generated content, I guess.

If you're into being an active editor, generating stories by asking people to write 'em, you might have a wider spread (and hence a longer life).

Some ideas (no, I'm not offering to write 'em):

What the hell does NS Draftroom do? (Interview with Draftroom longtimer).

Does the picture tell the story? (Contrasting interviews -- posters who provide pics of their RP characters, those who work from a pic but stick to words, those who don't have any clear idea of the character's physical attributes.)

It's easy, I just ... (posters give away the tricks of their trade: how they made that handwritten missive/impressive coat of arms, whether PhotoShop is too much trouble, good freebies, how to stop pics exploding across the screen, what makes a good icon -- could be a simple weekly Q&A column).

Background Music (no, seriously, there's loads of music in posters' sigs. Any one style/musician/group dominate? What's the content -- inspirational, cynical, moralistic, satirical? Does it fit the poster's online persona, or is it a contrast? What's the vintage?) Could be a Quote/Unquote offshoot of this, too, for what other stuff is sigged.

Under the Influence Some invaders/defenders say Influence killed the game. But they're still around, and they're doing something out there ... (interview)

Is There a Doctor in the House? Yes, there is. We've also got a professional archaeologist, a rabble of teachers and journos, more lawyers than any sane person could want to see in one place, a couple of engineers, military folk, scientists of various kinds, a translator, sundry McJob holders and a clown -- or so we/they say. Based on the efforts of whoever has the time and inclination to trawl through the archives, what do NSers (say they) do for a crust?

Liberal Bias in International Bodies: or, How the Hippies Are Taking Over the WA A title just for certain friendly in-game opponents, but there could be a story in what, if any, general tenor the WA resolutions have.

Some of these sound like threads that have already been in various forums. Sure. So ... borrow ... them. It's not bare-faced robbery, it's, um, promoting debate in a wider audience.

what?

Well, I am hoping we have a wide variety of articles. It would be nice to have news items posted on current roleplays. For example, say Ashmoria has an earthquake and you decide to create a roleplay about it. Then you could post news articles on the earthquake if you wanted to. Also, nations can also submit pieces pertaining to real world events such as commentaries.

You do realise, though, that it may make you into an Editor?

Really Good Editors(TM) are bitter, twisted, cynical, emotionally retarded leeches who are totally unreliable. They are also idealistic, inspirational, honourable, generous, warm and blessed with a crazy sense of humour. Plus, they work 48 hours in one day, every day. If they drink, they shouldn't, and if they don't, they should.

Is this really where you want to go?:D

No, it's for all forms of roleplay. We have no restrictions there.

Yes, the paper is definitely lacking in content. But it takes writers to add content. :) And we can't do it by ourselves, it would make things rather boring and to monotone. We need variety, and a wide range of contributors would go a long way to improving the paper.
