wtf? Did he accidentally make a snow Hitler or something? How is that unsportsmanlike behaviour? Gloating? Are stupid little dances disallowed now after a touchdown?

This was decided back in 2006... The main change: Stay on your feet. No more push-ups, sit-ups, boat-rowing, snow angels or worm crawls.

Oh, boo-hoo! A whole ten thousand dollars for a guy who cracks 1.7 million a year. For a guy like me that's a 100 dollar fine. But then I'm not some big shot ball jockey. You know what also irks me is how many anti-capitalists complain about corporate executive or manager salaries but a guy running around in the field for millions of dollars doesn't bother them at all. I mean it's a guy running around chasing a ball. I'm sorry, how is this interesting to anyone with an above-canine level intelligence? Aw, I'm just kidding, don't go off on a rant about strategy and comradeship and role models and shit. Happy Holidays!

Snow angels are specifically against the rules about excessive celebration, but I wish they weren't, and I think the fine is too high. It was kind of a bummer after an amusing moment in the game.

I remember when he did that, the commentators said he would get slammed for it, and they said they thought there should be an exception for snow angels, and then they went on trying to interpret the scene differently, along the lines of he made the goal, and then he stubbed his toe on something and fell and what he was doing there was writhing in agony. Yeah, that's it. Horrible agony. :D

Meh. Sports have rules and violating those rules can have consequences.

Here, as has been explained, there is a very specific rule against Welker's conduct. That you may find that conduct cute or endearing is irrelevant. Regardless, as has also been noted, Welker can more than afford having indulged himself at the expense of the rules.

You're right of course. I still think it's a little silly and unfair since the penalty was declined, but that's just me.

A $10,000 fine for a snow angel is outright ridiculous. If I wind up making a 1984 parody, I am sooooo using that. But at the same time, I won't even bat an eyeleash if the NFL goes the way of Enron.

Professional athletes who want to get paid, and all other athletes in sports where field condition is not a make-or-break concern. I've played soccer in snow, hail, rain, wind (always good fun) and scorching heat.

Uh...perhaps because team owners make a whole HELL of a lot more than any player ever will. I'm hesitant to call players greedy when they're effectively sacrificing health in the years after their playing days, and when owners are greedier by far.

You know, I'm finding it very hard to get properly worked up about this. There are rules of the league, this guy violated them, he had to pay up. Sounds reasonable to me.

I'm curious as to whether those upset by this fine are actually fans of the NFL.

It's the lack of discretion. Shaun Ellis threw a chunk of compacted snow into the stands and got a $10,000 fine. Wes Welker made a snow angel after scoring a touchdown and got a $10,000 fine. So, the message the NFL rules committee is sending is that throwing giant blocks of ice at fans is just as bad as doing a snow angel after scoring a touchdown.

He was working and he violated league policy for which there can be fines. I am sure they all signed something agreeing to the leagues ability to give out fines.

One thing I heard out of this stupid mess is that the money goes to charity. So I guess there is a silver lining.
